Reminds me, think I have a container of scalpel blades out in the barn. Yes, I have some issues..........:)

So, 42mins later and I have given CountyComm more money. I blame HSO! Their beanies are great if you want cold weather head gear. Of course I HAD to get to $100 for "free" shipping.

Yes, it is just a slip joint. Yes, it uses a scalpel blade instead of an exotic alloy. Yes, it is still a wonderful deal and YES, I ordered 4 more.
Seems like the sort of knife which doesnt seem particularly useful until you remember that you left your "real" knife at home......But wait! I DO have this little thing stashed in my boot/pocket/desk drawer/underwear.......:D

How sharp are factory scalpel blades actually compared to a well sharpened knife?

I know they have the reputation, but I wouldn't imagine they'd have to be terribly sharp to cut through soft tissue, once.

Wonder what steel they're made from?

Usually a high stainless that can be sterilized, and boy are they sharp. The cut in soft tissue is clean, and smooth, and easy. You don't even know that the scalpel found meat until several seconds later when you see the blood...don't ask me how I know. They readily cut multiple times.

Dumb thought number 6572471.

Could you get the scales off and anodize them to a fun color without a terrible amount of effort and or special tools?

The blades haven't been sterilized for years, if not decades. They use a stainless steel handle that holds the scalpel blade, which these little folders were later developed to use. The blades are disposed of in sharps containers after use on only one patient. It's just the handles that are autoclaved or sterilized by some other approved method.

From hso's nefarious link "Grade 5 Titanium Heat Treatable Removable Scales (medium/advanced skills required)"

You lost me at “underwear”. “Scalpel” and “underwear” just don’t go together. Nope.
Kinda like a Kershaw "Leek" in a back pocket..... actually I think that's how they got the name.....

Anyway, I'm going to buy a few of these. All I really need them for is putting in every hunting bag with a pack of blades, but I can see leaving them laying everywhere (like I do my safety/sunglasses) so I eventually can't loose all of them.

True, but they're sterilized before packaging.
