They seem to not just make it but thrive. There's a lot of farmland near the feeder to boot. The coastal areas of southern Finland are relatively mild, nowhere near as harsh as Lapland. Not much different from Wisconsin, Minnesota or the Dakotas where whitetail are native and common.

It seems like I'll have to do something about the spiders, there are webs all over the lens again. Once the sun sets and IR lights up they're really annoying. :cuss:

Update, or more like upgrade: we did some tests and the LTE uplink does indeed support 4Mbit stream nicely. So we doubled the bandwidth, the picture quality improved markedly.

The feeder has been empty for a couple of weeks while I've been hunting moose in Lapland. Now it's loaded and there's an additional bowl/tray next to it so the feeding frenzy is about to resume shortly.

All right, just got back from refilling the feeder, or more like the plastic tray next to it. There's 110lbs of frozen blackcurrant on it now. It's still unusually warm, 45-50°F, so it'll thaw and start fermenting slowly, releasing lots of odor.

Blackcurrant? Well, we had some grade III blackcurrant at our firm, it's been sitting there for three years and it doesn't quite meet our quality standards for freeze drying. Now that the walk-in freezer is scheduled for maintenance and I didn't want to transfer it to box freezers, I started dumping it at the camera site. If the deer like it, there's a few hundred lbs more left.

We'll see.

Quite a bit of action at the feeder tonight. Two large and three small bucks during last couple of hours, and so many does and fawns that I've lost count.

Specialty of the day: sliced pumpkin. Had to figure out how to use leftovers from Halloween. I know, they're deer, not hoofed garbage disposal units, but let's see if they like it.

Thanks for the link, currently watch what is probably the late comer doe on the right of your picture still grazing.

Aside from an occasional fox and raccoon dog, not really. No bears or wolves in the area and it's several years since I've seen wolverine tracks. Owls seem to like the trees in the background at night, maybe because the feeder also attracts mice.

That's really cool, better than watching the news.

I liked that Sasquatch that was eyeing up the grub a while ago. :p
Seriously cool though. I'll keep tuning in, thanks.

Just like real deer hunting here. I tune in to see wind, rain (possible wet snowflakes?) and does. Very cool. Would be neat if you could get some partners to set up cameras in different locations around the world.

Question about your whitetail deer. Being not-native, are they considered a nuisance or problem? I could see this happening given their prolific breeding and adaptability.

Some crop damages and other issues are obviously unavoidable but whitetail has a solid game animal status. I haven't checked the latest stats but the population has exploded in a number of areas. Obviously some farmers hate them with a passion.

At a feeder, from a bait, at night; pretty much any way you like it. Driving them with dogs is restricted to four months of the 5.5-month deer season, you can't use artificial light except for tracking wounded game and no handgun or shotgun buckshot hunting (rifles, shotgun slugs, bows etc. are ok) but otherwise there are few restrictions. More or less the same thing with roe and fallow deer, except with an additional one month roe buck spring season from mid-May to mid-June. Tags aren't limited to either buck or doe, you can shoot either, or "divide" your tag to two fawns instead.

Here we go again, a snapshot from the camera aright now. The camera itself has been fine all along installed inside a cut bottle to prevent moisture, but the switchbox containing RJ45 connectors had corroded and had to be replaced. This time I hosed with dielectric grease so it should work for a while now.

I have a love/hate relationship with using devices against their intended purpose so small glitches are inevitable now and then.

Here we go again. There was a third deer, a doe, slightly to the left of the buck but it left a second before I captured the screen. (You can still see the silhouette if you squint a bit)

We got a bit of snow about a week ago, temperatures well below zero F and now the weather will probably be mild until next wednesday or thursday. Whenever it snows a bunch of whitetail and roe deer show up, like a clockwork. This is the only feeder within a mile or so and we're surrounded by no-hunting-zones so all the traffic has been fun to watch lately.

I put the link on my cell phone and watch it sometimes during the day. I've seen as many as 7 Whitetail does there at one time.
It is addicting. Makes me want to do this behind my house. I have about 7 does that think they own the place. It's fun to watch them at about 1am in the morning when they think they are getting away with munching on my Iris and no one seeing them do it.
There are two Whitetails eating at your feeder as I type this.
Fantastic idea!

Here we go again.

The feeder has been active for a few weeks now and we've been increasing the amount of oats we put out weekly. There's been a bunch of traffic, mainly roe deer but a few nice 6-8pt whitetail bucks too.

I just bought a new QHD camera to replace the FHD one, much better optics and more sensitivity. It'll be online shortly, when I have time to go out, configure the new camera on site and make the switch.

Stay tuned.

Phew! A project is finally finished and the results are online.

A buddy of mine had this great idea of broadcasting live 1080P full HD stream from my feeder onto his web page and as a tech geek I was all for it. We built a system combining a waterproof 2Mpix IP camera, quite a bit of CAT6 cabling, an LTE uplink with a high-gain antenna and assorted bits and pieces to make it work. It's streaming through one of my servers.

Take a look yourself, https://www.nordicshot.fi/riistalive/

("riista" = game in finnish, "live"... well, you've probably figured it out by now)

Enjoy. It's pretty addictive when you keep it rolling for a while. Approximately a dozen whitetails and a few roe deer frequent the feeder daily. Catching a glimpse of moose or fallow deer isn't out of the question either.

Wait…. You’ve got white tailed deer in Finnland?

Wait…. You’ve got white tailed deer in Finnland?
Yep. Courtesy of Finnish American immigrants who, back in early-mid 1900's though it would be a great idea to ship a couple of dozen to Finland, to complement the existing moose, roe deer and forest reindeer as game animals. Now there are well over 100.000 of them around and the population is growing fast.
I noticed you went off line for a while. Look forward to you being back online.
Thanks
Sorry about that. The YouTube link it's fed through is flaky at times and the system needs to be restarted every now and then. That's the price to pay for having a real-time live HD feed.

All right, now we're in business. A QHD camera is online, with a much improved picture quality and slightly better IR lighting. Aspect ratio changed a bit so the image is a bit higher than it was but overall this was a worthwhile upgrade.

The downside is that I'll probably have to pick up a bunch of twigs and clean up the area around the feeder, now you can see everything clearly and fewer things are a blur anymore. It's not even the resolution, it's the optics. Foscam G4EP at the moment, amazing value at less than €55/$64. Now I just need to decide what to do with the old camera. The LTE might be able to support another video feed from the same site and the PoE switch still has a couple of unused ports...

Last night we brought a number of 50 gallon drums of oats to the feeder and now it's filled. And stays that way for a while, it seems. Does and fawns (both whitetail and roe deer) found it right away, we're expecting the bucks to return tonight too.

Enjoy!

Seems like a family dinner, earlier tonight. Quite a few spikes and at least four 6-8 point bucks have frequented the feeder since last friday.
