Just getting set up for a small batch of .45-70, couple of different bullets/loads. Adjusted the RCBS dies making up a dummy case. Apparently the initial seating die set up had a wee bit to much crimp (ya think!?) and the case wrinkled.

Q: If I pull the bullet, load the wrinkled case, then shoot it (Cimarron 1874 Sharps falling block) will it fireform the case back into shape? Or should I just toss it and get back to work?

I had a few 9mm and 45 auto cases do that when I first started reloading. It doesn't always blow the wrinkles back out. The real question is whether it will chamber or not. If you do shoot it I would suggest loading it lighter to avoid any pressure issues from the smaller inside volume.

"Send it"

Nah seriously pull it though...I have a few 10MM I did like that..still have to pull them..I call them "Ribbed for Gender-Neutral pronoun pleasure"..

You could pull the bullet and resize it. then reload it.
But why bother?, I would toss it. Seems as the brass would be seriously weak in that area

I spent over an hour trying to clear out a cheap sprinkler head port (head) finally gave up and just put a new $2 head in. Some things just not worth it!

I wouldn't shoot it, it's probably ok if it chambers though. I always seat and crimp in separate steps. 45-70 brass lasts a long time, that case probably will not. I've been loading the same 100 45-70 cases for about 4 years and they've probably got 10+ loadings and none have failed, some have been loaded pretty warm. I mostly shoot 405 grain cast over trailboss for plinking around , loaded like that I suspect they'll be around for years to come.

Pull it, Resize/Expand it, Reload it.
Brass is fine for that level loadout.

This ^^^^

I did the exact same thing to a 45-70 a few weeks ago.
I did it on my second batch and forgot I was monkeying with the seater / crimper from the first time around.

I pulled it and re-sized it.
I was happy with how that particular case looked after re-sizing it and loaded it up.

It will get fired off this weekend if things go as planned.

If your gut is not happy with how the case looks after you rework it, toss it and move one.
It is not worth fretting over at that point.

If I pull the bullet, load the wrinkled case, then shoot it will it fireform the case back into shape?
Yes, unless the pressure's too low, in which case you should load and shoot it again. That's a minor dent, and nothing life the fireforming many of us do.

Remember you need to back off the seating die before adj the body for crimp. SO you you probably did a couple of thing wrong.
yeah, I remembered. Right after it came out of the die.

pretty much where I was going with this

Pull it, Resize/Expand it, Reload it.
Brass is fine for that level loadout.

Thanks. Probably take middle of the road. I'll see if it chambers. If so, break it down, back through the dies and load it. If it doesn't smooth out, it's gone.

Thanks

So the cases are trimmed to the same length ?
I was wondering the same thing. I just loaded some new Hornady brass for my 6.5 CM. Case length varied .005. I trimmed all of them to the minimum length. It probably wouldn't matter since I don't crimp these, but it would make a difference if I did. I always check case length, even on new brass. The worst that I have found was some 300 Blackout brass that I bought at a gun show. It varied .030.

For me, if any dented, creases or buckled case has dents with sharp edges, it gets tossed. Sharp corners on creases/dents are a weak spot and the brass has been compromised, IMO. Smooth, rounded dents (like a "lube dent") normally shoot out fine...

For the case in the left pic, I'd pull the bullet and put the case away in case I ran out of brass and needed one. I might try to make it shootable...

GJeffB . . .
PM/Send the empty case to me.

I'll Resize It, Expand It, Load It, Shoot It.
... and send the now perfect case back to you w/ your postage to me added in with it.
:) :D

For the case in the left pic, I'd ...
just so there's no confusion, the two pictures are the same case, just two different views.

Thanks people
