So I had a Leupold VX-R 3-9 laying around and..........

It amazes me that guys think a 3-9 is too much magnification but would use a straight 4x in these same applications.

Example.....there have to be tens or hundreds of thousands of 4x scopes on .22’s and that’s perfectly fine. They seem to get fixated on the 9 and forget about the 3 part

LOL! Right? I have a Burris 3-9 on this Weatherby Mark XXII, 22 long rifle. I guess I’m a dirtbag in some circles.

It's about balance and choosing the right tool for the job. Why not a 4-16x? Because it's unnecessary. Unnecessary weight and bulk and magnification you can't utilize. If they all fit into a tidy 9", 9oz package, we'd all have 1-32x's but they don't.

To me, yes. A straight tube, low power variable (1-4x or 1.5-5x) is a much better fit for a levergun in terms of size and magnification. Plus they can be mounted lower.
I agree, specifically to get the lower mounting.

Ill take the extra power on the top end, and give up below 3-4 happily, but even with a riser lever gun stocks are too low for me to be comfortable with a larger bell scope. I want the scopes eye piece hugging the hammer as close as i can get it.....course I've only owned a couple lever guns with scopes, and only for about a month total.

Given that the vx-r is unused, looks like a good home for it.

Most of my shooting is offhand (squirrel, yote and deer), so 7X is about it.
If using a bipod I like 9X, up to 12X.
Bench w .22rf at 50 yds, or checking others at 100 yds, 12X min.

I had medium and low Leupold rings on hand. Medium was as close as I could get the bell. Surprisingly the cheekweld with the leather riser lines up perfect.

That's the part that matters most. How well it lines up for you. I never had a problem with a 3 - 9 x 40 on my lever guns. I had 2aossnerg pra 472 and a Winchester model 88.

ruger #1 in 45-70 with a 2.5-8x leupold and ruger #3 in 45-70 with a 1.75-6x leupold, both targets were shot at 100 yards from a lead sled and the same load 50 grs H 4198 with a hornady 300 gr bullet. i offen shot out to 500 yards at a 10" gong and after dialing in the rifle elevation it and no big deal ringing it 8 out of 10 times.
