Fellas, anyone scoped or put a red dot on an 1892? I know quite a few fellas out there scope their lever guns but after specifically what rail would be best on this model in the scout position. Its a 20" round barrel so some finicky work will be required I imagine. I'd get the local gunsmith to do it all anyway.

I'll probably retain backup sights in the form of getting a williams reciever mounted peep sight. Saw one on a gun before, if anyone had an exact part number or suggestion that would be good too. Not interested in tang sights or any other open sight as a primary anymore. My astigmatisms are bad enough I know when to call it quits. The option of switching out red dots and scopes will give me a new hobby to play around with.

And if the mods want to move this, no probs, just realised it may be better off in Accessories and optics.

The R92's are drilled and tapped under the rear sight. Take that off and you'll see the mounting points. Rossi sells an inexpensive picitanny base that bolts right up to it.

I beat on mine pretty good on some tough deer drives through some thick brush and thorns and the Bushnell TRS25 on the factory mount has never failed or had the zero wander in about 5 years.

Traditional scope will block ejection, need a scout scope. I have found the Rossi rail to not be parallel with the bore and needed to shim it to be able to get enough elevation adjustment. Love the gun though.

I'm glad they do, it costs them probably a dollar per each rifle to do it. It'd cost me probably $50 to have a smith D&T it.
I managed to find one of their tang sights, NOS, and had the tang on my Rossi 92 D&T, only needed one hole. I think they charged me around $25 a few years ago.

As it were, I decided to put a scout scope on it, the tang sight just sits there folded over. Maybe one day....

The particular Rossi model I got, now discontinued, came with a Rossi scope mount, which works fine.

Thanks fellas, I had a rail on an octagonal barrel at one point, when my eyes were okay. The gun got sold a while ago as was very muzzle heavy. Wasnt sure how a rail would go on the round barrel I now use. Sounds like not a big problem. Just clarifying the above so the rossi rail needs a shim to be paralell to the bore, but the NOE does not?

It's more likely than not that neither will need it. If the mounting holes are true and straight (mine are) and the base is true and straight (my factory one is, I'd assume NOE's would be as good, if not better) you'll be fine.

If the mounting holes in the action are off, any base might need shimmed/modified.

The pre-drilled and tapped holes on the round barreled Rossi R92 are on a section of the barrel that's tapered. The NOE Picatinny rail is tapered to compensate. Last time I looked NOE was out.

When my teen daughter expressed an interest in deer hunting, I mounted a Bushnell TRS-25 on my 20" .357 R92 using an NOE Bullets rail. I also installed one of the bolt-mounted peeps from Steve's Gunz for a backup.

I recommend that you use a drop of blue Loctite on the mounting screws to ensure they tight.

My Rossi original equipment rail was fine, tapered to the barrel contours, and needed no shims.

I wonder if the need for shims was putting a tapered mount on a straight octagonal barrel?

The black NOE mount appears to be out of stock, but the silver one appears to be in stock. Could be painted black, of course.

16" Round barrel. Tried two different rails ordered from Rossi.
