My wife bought this rifle at an estate sale recently. I am new to lever guns having bought my first, Henry 45/70, last year. Her thoughtful self felt I needed a proper 30/30. $275.00 and her good graces got me a rusty, crusty swollen wood rescue rifle.
I ordered a Lyman peep sight, did some reading, and went to work. It’s a 1973 vintage, so no real historical value at risk.
I took the rifle apart and deep cleaned. I blasted the pitted and rusty steel with fine media giving a matte finish and Oxpho blued everything after heating with a blow dryer. I sanded the wood just enough to get the ugly off and applied 7 coats of danish oil.
I reassembled with much effort. Again I am new to lever guns. The bore looks good so I think it will be a shooter.
