Anyone Reload 5.7x28?

No single shots. See above for more in depth criteria.

Standard handgun actions ie revolver or semiauto.
Standard handgun cartridges, not rifle rounds in a handgun. No BFR.
Common caliber.
Reloadable.

This leaves 9mm, 10mm, 38 Super (borderline common), 357, 44, 327 (borderline common), 45 ACP, 45 Colt, 40, & probably some others. I have a separate thread in the general handguns forum.

If reloading I recommend the hornady sizing die. The lee dies would not size correctly verified by case gauge.

I think I’m going to look into .22 TCM. Same concept as 5.7 but a proven parent case, the .223!

If it's a huge PITA to reload, that will knock it out.

It is a PIA. The polymer coating. The stretching cases, plus it takes a light charge so deviations are more apparent. (Although thats true for any round using smaller loads. 9/40 etc). I wouldn't say it's any harder to load. But there is a lot more to worry about than most other rounds. For a semi auto (that isn't comically large like the 357 mag/44 etc guns are) 10mm is about as good as it gets. And right now there are many options. Back When I bought one there was a Glock, A Kimber or a Witness IF you ever saw one. Or a used Smith or Colt or D&D if you were brave enough

Any round will make holes in paper or ring a gong at 100. The 10mm, 357, 44 etc have enough left at 100 to do more.

The 44 a lot more

FN says the polymer coating is to help prevent the straight wall case from sticking in the chamber. Has anyone run into this?
One + for the 5.7 is that NATO recently declared it a standard caliber. Along with the 5.56, 7.62x51, 9mm Luger/Parabellum/NATO, and 12.7mm

For your criteria I would go with 357 as to most flexable followed by 44 MAG and then 10 MM. All three have a smaller power round that can be used. All three are available in a revolver configuration and are reasonably easy to reload with common inexpensive components.

Agreed. For versatility I’ve basically decided on 357. I’m trying to choose between the GP100 and 686 and 4 or 6 inch barrels.

I reload 5.7, using Accurate #5 and Ramshot True Blue and 40 grain V-max bullets. I had enough brass that I am only on the first reload of the brass. I have a FN five seven, and have not had any feeding issues with the coating, but when ammo comes back(if), I will be stocking up as it is not my most enjoyable cartridge to reload. As for the gun, a complete tack driver out to 100yds, with no recoil, and 20+1 rounds in a very light package. You won't know what I am saying until you pick one up, and shoot one, as it is very light, with less recoil than any 9mm. Also, a word of advise, don't let your wife shoot it... you won't get it back.

I reload 5.7x28 successfully but it is time consuming. Someone gave me about 1,500 pieces of brass I assume once fired as not many people reload these. I never had an issue with my reloads but if I pick up the brass then it is 2x fired and I take extra care in checking the brass if I reload them again. If so, that's it for the brass. I have the FN 5.7 pistol and the PS90. Also an upper for my AR-15. Some brass needs the primer pockets reamed as well. I DO have a stock of FM factory ammo that was $25/50 which I thought was high at the time. And yes they are small, but not as bad as .380 IMH.

Any handgun that's got a good trigger will do 100 yards. Easy mode is a 357 or 10mm.

I prefer .22s, but it's hard to hear steel get ting'd at the range when others are there.

I used to shoot a Ruger Super Blackhawk 10 1/2 Barrell .44mag in Silhouette (all open sights of course) and it would knock the steel ram down at 200 yards everytime if your shot placement was decent. A friend of mine used to do it with a .357mag ( i think his was a Dan Wesson)

I've shot a 686 6" barrel and my dad broke my heart when he sold it, I was deployed so I got the news way to late. If that's your choice I believe you will be satisfied.

Yes, but I think 10mm is what you're really after.

10mm you can shoot in 1911, S&W 610, some Ruger hawks ... there are only two common 5.7x28 pistols and they both have really poor triggers. I got my Five-seveN down to half the trigger pull but it is No 1911

10mm is an easy to load strait wall, high pressure pistol cartridge that uses large primer (typically, and typically more available) and can take a wide range of powders. Projectiles and dies are shared with 40s&w, but much better for your 100 yard shooting. I love shooting my TRP in 10mm offhand at 75 - POI = POA
