Question regarding thoughts on platforms and cartridges in today's severe anti-2A, anti "Tacticool Scary" environment...

Will rimless autoloader cartridges (example being 5.56 NATO) become more prevalent in manual action rifles, or will the old school cartridges (think .30-30 Win.) make a comeback ?

Will the old school lever/bolt guns see a resurgence with the obviously intended and probably incoming crackdown on plastic and autoloading ?

I went both ways on this years ago.

Not so much because semi-autos might be banned, but because I like lever-actions though I accept the fact that semi-autos designed for the purpose are better in that regard.

If we go by what they *want* to do *all* of them will be banned.

I didn't realize the 30-30 and similar rounds had ever left. I much prefer my lever actions and bolt guns to most semi autos. My 357 Marlin is my most favorite of all my guns. The semi autos I do like to shoot are my SKS rifles and Marlin 9mm Camp Carbine. And I don't sit around and worry about stuff that hasn't happened yet. Thats just a waste of time and non productive.

Well, right now of course, ammunition availability is still close to being a moot point. I visited Turners last week and about all they had in stock in any quantity was .308 Winchester and 7.62x39. I have a CZ527 bolt gun and SKS in the former chambering, but I don't shoot either that much. I've two bolt guns (Kimber and Israeli K98k) and a Garand in .308, same deal.

The only lever gun I own at present is a Savage 99 in .303 Savage, which nobody makes in quantity anymore. I hand-/reload of all of my rimmed rifle cartridges out of necessity, except .303 British which I could buy OTC but handload anyway. I've also a bolt gun, single shot and pump action in .223.

Fact is, except for 5.56 and 7.62 M80 ball, I reload all of my non-rimfire rifle ammo, so my buying habits wouldn't affect the popularity of loaded commercial ammo sales either way. Oddly, I've yet to own a 30-30, but its popularity is so well-established that any market shift would just require a slight boost in current ammo production.

Now if 32-40 made a comeback, that would be something!

Biden just appointed a man who promised to ban AR's as director of the ATF. This is a major plank in the Democratic platform. The sky isn't falling yet. But expect a major effort. Hopefully he will be blocked. He also wants to register guns by lumping them with machine guns.

I have a few semi-auto rifles. The only reason I bought them was because they're being restricted in my state. I mostly shoot bolt rifles. I find them more interesting because of the accuracy advantage.

Anyone who thinks semi-auto rifles aren't being targeted for more restrictions isn't paying attention.

I like your style. 357 carbine is the most fun range gun I have. A camp 9 sounds fun. But I have never found one for sale.

People have been yelling "the sky is falling, the sky is falling" for many decades. Here's a tip, the sky ain't falling. Semi autos aren't going anywhere.

They might not be going anywhere but they may become extremly difficult to aquire if you don't already have one. The first step will be to ban sales. A very common tactic to get legislation passed is to grandfather the existing rifles into the law but restrict the private sale of those. It's already happened in my state so Humpty Dumpty was right, at least where I live.

Actually it wasn't Humpty Dumpty it was Chicken Little who said "The Sky Is Falling". I call the OP Chicken Little all the time in the emails we trade. He worries about more new laws and more bad things happening than anyone I know. And he doesn't even own any of the guns that would be on anyone's radar. :scrutiny:

If you see one at a reasonable price get it. They are just as much fun as the lever 357. And mine is accurate enough that we shoot an iron pole set in the ground at the edge of my buds pond that is 95 yards away from his front porch. We shoot the pole and it rings like a bell. All shots are off hand. The best so far is 8 hits out of 10 shots. Thats with open sights and whatever ammo I happen to have with me that day. The pole is 3.5" outside diameter. Its old drill rod, the stuff everyone makes pipe fences out of. Thats where he got from when he fenced across the front of his property.

If I see one of the new Ruger 9mm carbines that doesn't cost a Kings Ransom I will have one of those too. My old Hi-Point 9mm is almost as accurate as the Marlin. But I gave it to my oldest son.

My nephew got a Ruger 9 PCC take down or whatever it's called.
It's very accurate and fun. I got the joy of sighting it in for him.
I really want one in 40 S&W.

Can't go wrong with the Ruger PC Carbine. My father has one, and it is a tack driver.

Going to put a lever on my FN-FAL to get around any new bans. The lever won't actually do anything, it will just be there. Maybe make it release the magazine so I can insert a new 20 rounder. So I should only need to use the lever 30 times before I have to refill the mags.

Lever action rifles and revolvers are still allowed in Australia.

People need to be reminded that its the Indian, not the arrow. In one of his articles Even Marshall stated he would rather face the typical Street Creep armed with an Uzi that a PPC Champ armed with a 38 snub. Heck I would be fine with lever guns and revolvers. Matter of fact those are my preferred guns. And I have good selection of them. Of course I DO NOT want any new laws and sure don't want semi-autos banned. I'll throw mine in the lake before I will surrender them to the government. Or at least I would cut them in several pieces so they can't use them against me.
