I made a small score of range brass and hopefully a new business acquaintance recently.

A private club near me had some work done to an out building, while there I met the maintenance guy. He tells me it took him an eight hour day to get their machine gun working, on a Saturday.
I said, “Wait, you have a machine gun?” As my eyes glazed over and a sinister grin smeared across my face.
“Yeah, but I like the Gatling gun better. It doesn’t take any fixing.”
“Gatling Gun?!” Shock now replaced my glee, as elation took over and I dropped my hammer.
“Like this?” As I made the cranking motion.
“Yup.” He smirked. He had me now…

Well, this nice gentleman maintains a 45 Colt Gatling gun, an M-60, and an M-82!

:what:What!?! Where do I pay?! Who takes my money, NOW?!

I haven’t set up a meeting to shoot the BMG, but when he pulled up Friday, he said he had a gift for me and my pal. A full bucket of range brass! Full!
And more where that came from! Exceedingly grateful to him, he accepted no payment. But the recycling place won’t pay so he just dumps them in the trash.:((I almost puked a little hearing that…) So he gave me that one, and on receipt of the second I will force a twenty into his shirt pocket!;) Hopefully I’ll get calls more often to get brass, or even pick it up for him.

Since Pal is a revolver guy he got the 44 magnum and 45 Colt brass, half of the five gallon bucket was this. (He had known about the machine gun and was actually hoping for .308 machine gun brass, for some strange reason… :scrutiny:)
We split the 5.56 in half, a lifetime for he but a grateful pittance for me, and I took what I shot. Amazingly, over a hundred 50AE and a box of 450Bushmaster! A few Blackout and auto pistol cases.
And of course, two 50 BMG cases. Reginald said he’s thrown out hundreds.
Having never held one in my greasy meat hooks before I am in awe! Holy Snap! Now I have more understanding. They are freaking huge! I can just toss a 30-06 cartridge in there!
I don’t think I need one, but I need to shoot one!

What a great boon. Nearly makes up for them opening up the bee hive while I was in the area…
Forty minutes of trying to get in my truck, without an angry bee or seven.:fire:

Now, on a much more serious note. :uhoh:

I have also recovered two boxes of 22-250 cases, as seen in the center, darn it.

Unfortunately that seems to be the lower limit for having enough brass for a rifle.
It pains me to say it, but I may be forced to buy a rifle and some dies to put this perfectly good brass to use…:)

That’s a really cool encounter and score of free brass!:) I’m with the OP using the “:(” emoji when hearing of someone throwing away large quantities of brass.

You just never know when you may network with someone that can meet some of your needs. I’m always looking for the right person that does certain things or knows someone who does and can put me in contact with a new source of whatever I’m looking for at the time. I love to barter, trade, swap, or work for things I want and try to be gracious when it comes my way.

Sort out the brass and what you don’t need, list it for sale or trade for what you do need. You may get brass, bullets, primers, or powder for some of that brass, or even $ to buy what you need. It’s all good in the end. Shooting a machine gun is just icing on the cake if that works out.

but I may be forced to buy a rifle and some dies to put this perfectly good brass to use…

Darn! I hate when that happens.
In my younger days I had a box of 357 ammo follow me home.
I didn't have a 357 then.
A couple of months later I had a S&W 66-2 (P&R) follow me home.
The gun & ammo did a little conoodling.
Soon I had over 1,000 rounds reloaded.

So I feel your pain.
A 22-250 huh? Sounds like fun!

Up until about 3 years ago there used to be a lot of brass on the ground at the public range. They then required shooters to clean up after themselves and remove it from the site, not in a garbage can like before. Its been about 3 years since I could get brass there.

When there was brass I picked up everything I found even if it didn't use it. I would trade off the stuff I didn't shoot for brass I needed. I used to trade a lot of 40 S&W brass for .357 Magnum brass. Of course it wasn't 1 for 1 but so.what, I don't and probably be er will.own a gun in 40 S&W.

Always good to get a windfall like that. I got one from the guy that used to clean up the ranges at my gun club; I worked overnights then, got off at 7AM, and went up and scrounged brass, and eventually he "caught" me. He'd bring his dogs out for the exercise while he dumped the centerfire brass out from the trashcans, and dumped the rest of the trash in the dumpster. We got to talking, he asked me what calibers I loaded, so I told him, and he brought a cat littler buck full with him from home the next time. He didn't even reload, just kept it in various types of storage bins in his garage. He'd give some to the local Hunter's Safety classes each year. He had me follow him home and gave me a lot more of the same calibers I'd asked for before. I hadn't had to buy .223 until two years ago, when I decided to make up issue-type cans (840 in bandoliers and stripper clips in an M2 can.) for my sons and I.

you should sell some I know guys are looking for stuff.
Ha! That’s me!:D
I’m losing more and more with every cycle of my AR brass. I’m about to retire this lot. (Dang near new barrel time.)
I hope we’re getting into the shooting season. The men that are able to frequent this club are unlikely to care what the price of ammunition is.;)
Much of the Colt brass said Underwood on it!:what:

The best part, oodles of brass to clean! I don’t know why I like that part, but I’m good at it.
I definitely look forward to gifting and selling the unwanted cases.
I have got to shoot that Fifty!

Hmm. Looks like those are the only available primers in the land. Coincidence?
