Hello everyone, so I found this old H&R The American double action in my parents attic that belonged to my great grandfather. I'm slowly but surely taking it apart, however the cylinder pin is broken and refusing to come out. I've tried tapping it out from the back without any luck. The cylinder and pin spin together, so my next step is soaking it in some rust remover. The gun is in rough shape and I worry the rust remover might ruin the metal of the gun, any information is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

. . . some penetrating oil.
After "some", try Kroil. Add heat to drive it in. From elsewhere:
SOP for seized anything:
-apply Kroil. Go away, come back tomorrow.
-apply Kroil, heat until the Kroil is just seething/bubbling/boiling out of the joint. I use a propane torch, a hairdryer won't cut it. You're boiling the Kroil into the joint.

If the Kroil won't do it, nothing will. Also, be very sure of your geometry. . . pins, shoulders, etc.

plain old white vinegar takes rust off and won't hurt the metal as long as you don't forget about it. The acetic acid reacts with the iron oxide and take the rust off the base metal. You can scrub it clean with a wire brush after an hour or so in the vinegar. Rinse well with clean water and you should be good to go. Protect the metal from further rust with a finish of some type, or spray it with some oil to protect bare metal until you're ready to finish it.

Quick update: I was able to get the cylinder pin out FINALLY. Now the gun and a few parts are sitting in EvapoRust. Thank you everyone for the comments.

Congrats , always good to see a happy ending . You are well on your way now, please keep us updated on your progress. Good luck.

Dude, awesome. Keep up posted, let us know if it's a shooter or a hanger when you're done.

Take a few more pictures. I may have a parts gun for that thing.

Thank you everyone, I was able to rub off some of the black stuff that the guns covered in (super hard to get off) and underneath it its super pitted. Is there any fixing that?

Thank you for the encouragement, do to the shape it's in I plan on giving it back to my mom so she can keep it with the rest of her grandparents things.

Thank you so much, now to get this black stuff off. Thought it was rust but after doing some research I think it's hard carbon buildup. I was able to rub some of it off and it had pretty bad pitting underneath.

Good idea. It can come back to you in due time, but it may as well follow the family down.

Evaporust will remove rust nicely and even rust bluing. Leaves the metal in some areas black or dark gray but that buffs out nicely. I have an old axe head soaking in it right now. The best part is you don't necessarily need gloves and it doesn't smell.

Nothing is going to fix pitting, all you can do is get the grime and rust off to stop the deterioration.

Don't rush. If you think the muck is fouling, drop the HR in a can of Kroil, ATF+acetone, or just kerosine, mineral spirits, or diesel, and walk away for a week or two.

Evaporust does not attack the metal, several days soak will do a lot more than a dip.

PB BLASTER is the best rust dissolver and penetrant I've ever found. not sure is it's safe on gun finishes though.

I would not use it directly on blued finishes. It is great for freeing stuck parts, though.

PB isn't as good as WD Penetrating Oil, by test. I was quite surprised reading those results. It's NOT ol WD40, it's part of their technician line. I have found you don't need to soak things in Evaporust for weeks, it either gets it done in 24 hours or it can't.

I now have cans of PB lying around I won't use while the WD Penetraiting runs out frequently. I am going to mix a highly recommended garage solution of acetone and Dexron 50/50 as that is by the same test far superior to them all. Quart of each in a gallon can you can seal and it's both quick and cheap. Take caution of any non metallic parts being exposed to the acetone and use the appropriate gloves resistant to it.
