I have a bunch of handloads. Cast my own shot. Was in the same position as you last year so I choose to load my own. Hard to find even today locally.

I just bought 500 rounds of the NobelSport LE (Italy) from AmmoToGo for $400. It's high, but Federal will run anywhere from $50 to $150 (or higher) more for the same quantity.

00 is the alpha and omega for shotgun effectiveness.

Do not bother with any other size.

Check ammoseek. Any 00 WILL solve the problem, guaranteed.

If it's 00 buck you're looking for, I recommend checking budsgunshop. I order quite a bit from there, and they have decent online pricing.

As for a good 00 buck recommendation, I would look at Rio royal buck reduced recoil 00. I seem to have pretty good pattern sizes with it (3.4"@5 yards and only 10"@15yards, very respectable for conventional 00 buck out of a cylinder bore shotgun) , and it's a pretty cheap option to keep around when you can't find any of the flite control stuff.

Interesting question. The store here has shelves loaded with it. Also 3 1/2 turkey loads, steel shot, and anything except 7 1/2 - 8 target loads.

I also cast and reload my own 00 buck and slugs (3/4oz Lee Key Drive and Lyman Devastators), but my shotguns are loaded with Winchester XB121. This is a well respected 2 3/4" 16 pellet 1buck load. Slightly less penetration in intermediate barriers such as drywall and doors than 00 buck while still providing ample penetration. I have neighbors. I like them.

I use #4 buck for the scattergun that tags along with me outside of my bedroom for that exact reason.

#1 buckshot has never really gotten the respect…..or product availability it deserves. Through research and a bit of testing, I have decided #1 is probably a superior choice for hunting or defense than 00. #4 is likely best for densely populated areas where walls are shared between neighbors.

I have done a bit of buckshot hunting as well. Stand hunting mind, not drives. This way we’ll placed shots can be analyzed and all the unknowns of shooting at moving animals can be eliminated. A greater number of still adequately sized pellets results in higher hit potential and usually greater energy dump into the target.

In the past, I have loaded 2.75, 3, and 3.5 hulls with their respective amount of #1 pellets and used them on game. There is documented anecdotal evidence that 2.75 and 3” 00 generally patterns better and has higher hit potential than 3.5” 00 at similar ranges even though the 3.5 has more pellets. This difference disappears with #1 and 3.5” shells give higher hit potential than the smaller hulls with this size shot and the 2.75 and 3” pattern better than their 00 counterparts. It should also be noted that 10 gauge 00 patterns better with higher hit potential than 12 ga 3.5” 00 even though pellet counts are the same. This is my experience and as I said, this is all anecdotal. Shotgun patterns are a wildly variable thing. YMMV.

It’s too bad #1 buckshot is quite unavailable even during good times.

In the end, whatever patterns best is what you should probably use.

Target Sports

There's plenty of it here (00) at my LGS, but it seems like it is mostly from "off" brands from outside the US. Personally, I like #1 as a "do-all", since it is more than adequate for defensive use, and is considered the best choice for deer at short range. Also, my shotguns like the patterns it throws.

Your avatar doesn't say where you are, but many of my LGS here in West TN have 00 Buck on the shelf. Some of the big stores like Academy, Cabellas, and Rural King also have it. Most of it is Herters, Wolf, and Tula, but Cabellas had some Win 00 and slugs when I was there a few days ago.

It's hard to find.

A couple of weeks ago, I saw a bunch at Rural King. Of course it might have been Russian (I can't remember). If so, you can cross that off your list.

What others have said. To bad you can't find any locally as shotgun ammo is expensive to ship unless you can find free shipping if you buy a certain amount.

When the local Gander was closing three years ago they had Sellier & Bellot 2.75 #4 12 ga buckshot for $12 a 25 count box. They accepted my offer of $10 a box for all that was left on the shelf. Walked out ten minutes later $110 dollars poorer but happy.

Buds web site shows S&B #4 buck for $16 a box. Don't know about shipping.

My experience with Buds is that with taxes and shipping, it's normally best for bulk buys, I normally buy no less than 100 rounds per purchase. If I don't need too much at once, I will check with friends to see if anyone wants to combine an order.

Although I haven’t bought any ammo from Bud’s since they started collecting the now required state tax I have bought three firearms in that time that came with free shipping.
