Best youth rifles, .22lr. Also, any good gun magazines for youngsters?

My LGS just posted a few .22lr under $200, a used 10/22 for $175, a Remington 514 for $135 and a Scoped Pioneer .22lr bolt action for $100. I doubt they will be available by the time he gets his money saved up but maybe I'll point them out to his dad and he can set it aside til the boy comes up to the funds.

I was with the pastor and his boy when his dad was buying his first handgun, his boy had the same look I had when I went into the stores with my dad and uncle, lol. It's encouraging. I like the idea of the 1rd Ruger mag. I like a bolt action as much as the next guy but I think the 10/22 has the potential to be more fun once certain shooting disciplines and skill is in place...

Mossberg 702 Plinkster. Slick little rifle, lightweight and reliable. Ten-round removeable magazine, guarded FO front sight, generously-sized bolt handle.

Underrated value, in my opinion.

To the OP I think a good 10/22 will serve him well, an older model preferably. As for the 1 round mag, IMO that is a waste of money, just have him load 1 round at a time as that will be a good learning curve. As for reading material. Try posting a want ad, I have read several posts on here with people having decades worth of magazines and books and wondered what to do with them. You might be able to give him a library. Kudos to you for helping this young boy, with all the computer games and emasculating men these days and such the outlook of shooting and hunting is waning.

If someone can take him to a gun show he would be able to see a variety of rifles and prices. Guided by an adult he can learn a lot and decide what HE wants. I think single shots have the advantage of low price and they are equally inexpensive to operate. He's off to a good start, saving hard earned dollars with a goal in mind.

They will cost a few bucks more than some options, but like some others posted above, I'd highly recommend a CZ 452 Scout. It's a gun with every bit of the quality and accuracy of the full-size CZs, and very enjoyable to shoot even as an adult. He'll never outgrow it.

I think there’s probably something to that too. I know I’ve sure had a lot of fun over the years playing “Barbie Doll” with my own 10-22.;)
The thing is though, I have my 10-22 just the way I want it now. So I’m probably going to buy another one in order to use up the extra aftermarket accessories I’ve accumulated. I guess I could try selling them, but where’s the fun in that?:D

That's a good point about the semi-automatics. Kids seem to like them. Both of my boys liked the Browning SA-22 and 10/22 a lot when they were first starting to shoot. As teenagers I'm not sure which they prefer, but the semi-automatics were probably their favorite when they were younger.
