Not sure where to ask this, so if I'm in the wrong spot, please move admins.

I'm looking to buy some ar500 targets. I'm curious if anyone has some reliable sites to order from. I'm mainly looking for paddles to build a dueling tree, but might also pick up some auto-reset popup targets also. Thanks for any leads.

Bought my AR500 dueling tree "kit" off eBay. Been in use now for over two years at my local club, still swinging back and forth. NO RIFLE fire permitted though.

I bought paddle/tube kits off ebay and had good luck with them.
I bought 3/8" thick with tubes for center fire handgun and a set of thinner paddles for 22LR from the same vendor and use both sets on the same tree.

Rimfire .22 Dueling Tree DIY Kit Steel Shooting Target (6) 6" Paddles | eBay
Go to that seller's store for more options.

Based on prior experience, I cut this cam angle on the tubes to get the paddles to swing to either side and not get hung-up behind the "tree trunk".
That and angling the tree more forward than the instructions recommend, fixed all the swing problems.

Here's the tubes on another tree I built (for 22LR).

I have modified the tree since these pics, but know that I continually modify most everything.
Edit: the tree "trunk" unbolts from the base and the legs fold-up for transport.
Will post pics on request...

for swinging paddles, and centerfire pistol/rifle, action target's dueling tree is the only bullet proof option. i've had one for ten years and it's withstood many PRS style matches with hundreds of shooters hitting it with everything from zippy 6mm to 300wm

for auto reset popup targets, that's a bit more challenging. although there are some expensive options (i.e. over $5k / target) with cool features like programmable, the moderate option is probably the larue target. i bought several from a company that's no longer in business, so unfortunately that's not an option anymore

there are some members here with very cool homemade setups. do a search in rifle country

I've ordered a number of pieces from shooting targets 7. seem to be a solid veteran owned company. I can't compare against anything else however. as I haven't needed to buy anything other than that order.

So I Bing searched action targets and looked at their tree specs as I wanted to see what material the stand and feet are made of.
It says this:
"NOTE: The center stand and feet are made of mild steel and are not intended to withstand the force of a bullet. Shooting the stand and feet may result in damage."

I thought if the tree trunk and feet were AR500 it would account for the extra cost but they are not. :(
The paddles slide into 2 rings/swing pivots rather than a tube but other than that, I cannot see any difference in design or function from a DIY tree with a paddle kit with tubes.
The action target trees may perform better in a match environment but a fabbed tree would be cheaper for plinking and also "bullet proof".

You could buy the paddle kit, the mild steel for the tree/feet, AND a 110v flux core wire welder for less than the cost of the action targets'+ shipping cheapest dueling tree.
That and have the welder after the build to be used again for more targets. :)
Some may not be able to do a build like this, due to space/time/skill/other restrictions, but it is a cheaper way and many have done it.
:D

i didn't say it was cheap. it's fairly expensive. if you saw it in person you'd understand. the center stand is angled, so bullets typically strike it at a 45* angle and are unlikely to go right through it. mine does have a lot of divots though. don't think anyone ever hit the feet.

what makes it better are two design features. one is that the plates have no welds and are shaped in a way that impacts are unlikely to break them. the other is that most other designs allow the hinge to get clogged up with spalling and bullet fragments, dirt, whatever. this is common with plate racks too, but resetting plate racks is usually human muscle pulling a cord, so it can overcome the added friction. with horizontal swinging dueling trees, the challenge is calibrating them so that centerfire pistol and rifle can knock the plate to the other side, whether it gets hit on the far edge of the plate for more leverage or closer to the hinge. it requires as little friction as possible, otherwise the plate will get stuck 90* behind the stand and not swing the full 180*.
in my experience, every design with springs or tubes works fantastic when new and clean, but becomes very unreliable after a few hundred to thousand rounds. the AT design gets minimal friction by having two rings that have relatively tiny contact patch with the plate, and a lot of clearance. so it doesn't collect spalling, and can easily jump it if it does.

i'll try to find some close up pics

Here’s a pic of the front from this past winter. it’s not the important part but you can see how the stand and feet have held up A8C21036-F680-4FE7-B45B-C30A6DA5614D.jpeg

In addition to the paddles I posted on ebay, I was surprised of all the products when I searched amazon:
Amazon.com : dueling tree kit
Lots of kits and complete trees, even some that incorporate 2x4s for the tree and feet.
The reviews are interesting to read and see what the negatives are in the less-than 5 star reviews, something I like to do for items I plan to buy.
Because I have no life,

The cheapest dueling tree on their site is $200. The most expensive is $520. The cheapest Harbor Freight welder is $140. So, yeah, I'm not seeing the ability to save a ton of money building it yourself. Especially if you use AR500 steel for the entire thing. And it will weigh a ton. But to each their own.

Thanks for reading/quoting my post.

Not to get in a price discussion war but I think your math is somewhat flawed.
I'm thinking that $200 priced tree is mild steel for 22LR/rimfire.
Dueling Tree Targets, Magstars, Plate Racks (actiontarget.com)

The cheapest I recall was $466+ $140'ish shipping to me, for an AR500 3/8" thick paddle tree for center fire stuff. ($606 total)
Buying a $90 AR500 3/8" paddle/tube kit with free shipping leaves a lot leftover for the mild steel angle and HF AC flux core welder ($139) or even the Easy Flux DC welder ($209) when I do the math.
just sayin'
Edit: I have had bad luck welding AR500 with the equipment I have and would not recommend making the entire thing out of AR500.
I would expect any company welding AR500 to have the proper equipment for doing that.
Steel weighs the same whether mild or AR500 so the complete tree would weigh the same regardless of the steel used.

Thanks for the replies guys. I ended up ordering from the Ebay seller Tilos recommended. Got 6 6inch 3/8 paddles for $98 counting shipping. Now if my neighbor has the steel, I can make a nice dueling tree pretty cheap. Gives me a little welding project to work on also.

The different ones on Amazon had so many mixed reviews versus the ones on Ebay, so that was ultimately what made me go with Ebay.

Can't wait to have something else my dad will be able to out shoot me on, haha.

Most of my steel targets came from Shooting Targets 7 (Veteran owned). I use the 3/8" AR500 targets. Have shot them with everything from .22 LR to .45-70. The only rounds that slightly pitted the metal was some .243 rounds at 3400+ fps. I ordered a torso type target and hanger a few days ago and had it within 3 days. It is a good company.
I wish they would start selling animal type targets, like chickens, turkeys. pigs, etc. but as of now they don't sell them.

Come to find out, the Ebay seller Tilos recommended must be from makeitringtargets.com because that company is listed on my email tracking confirmation. I can't wait to get working on this project.

I went to my dad's house and banged on the steel gongs and hostage targets today with the 10mm and the 357. Paper target are fun, but shooting steel is much more enjoyable to me.

A cool little alien for the .22 LR range

Just color me cheap, cost was essentially $0 other than a bit of time and a few welding rods! Built this for CF handgun w/scrap liberty ship ribs from local ship breaking yard and angle iron out of our scrap bin. The rust pitting (from 50 years of storage prior to dismantling) has caused no problems using hardcast 45 ACP bullets only.

Cross section of the steel ribs were perfect for drilling the web for 1/2' hot rolled steel axle after cutting the paddles; only welding was to fabricate the frame.

hps
