I was watching an old movie on Amazon tonight, Tom Selleck's 1984 "Runaway" which is supposed to be et in the future.

In the movie, in which robots do all sorts of daily chores, they start to go crazy and our hero is after the evil doctor who is putting reprogramming chips in them. Interestingly, the doctor is played by KISS frontman Gene Simmons.

Tom Selleck and his partner carry longslide 1911s, which I thought was an odd choice for a "futuristic" pistol.

Turns out, the pistols are Detonics ScoreMasters.

Hollywood types and their (lack of) trigger discipline. It's completely distracting. Very cool thread though!
I even believe I've seen this movie on VHS in the 80's.

To be fair, this movie came out in 1984 and this is the period where trigger discipline as we know it today started to pick up.

So it's actually period-correct.

Ya, you gotta go Blade Runner-ish of you're going to make a movie about cops in the future.

Uh, hello.........Robocop!?! :)

Seen here with his heavily modified Beretta 93R.

Sadly, I think the neautered LEOs in "Demolition Man" are probably the way we're really going......

That movie was fairly prescient.
-drones
-IPAD/Tablet devices
-LEO’s carrying semi automatics. (Remember this was when the revolver was still more or less the default)
-Smart bullets.

All of those things have come to pass in some form or another and most are common place today.

Smart bullets have come to pass in some form? Dang, I really am out of touch with new developments. I should renew my subscription to Guns and Ammo. :)

It's scary how much they nailed where some folks are pushing us to go

Who specifically is pushing for reducing the firepower regular cops carry? I have seen some pushback against them getting surplus military equipment like armored vehicles, but none for taking away their guns. Have you?

Thanks for the info on the guns.

I remember watching this movie when it came out and wanted a 1911 Long Slide after that. I never got that “Long Slide” but I did get these a couple of years ago.

Yeah, not the same thing…but I like ‘em.

I still need to get a long slide for my G21. Probably a 40 MOS since I like 10mm in the woods.

The 6" barrel sticking out of the 21 length slide just doesn't "do it" for me, though closer to the classic 80s look.

This constitutes thread drift, I know, but I am responding to points, not creating them. If people who started drifing want to edit the drift out of their posts, I will be happy delete mine.
No need, I've cleaned up the thread. Any members who no longer see their post above, be aware that they have been removed.

On this forum, we don't drop political discussion in non-political threads. While this thread is mostly a discussion of movie guns, which in itself is a bit off-track, I'm willing to leave it open as long as we can keep the discussion focused on the subject of the OP

I always found these things interesting. I've never seen, nor heard of the movie before, but I remember seeing something similar in video games. One that comes to mind is the 10mm Pistol from the Fallout Series: Fallout4_10mm_pistol.png
Supposed to be the standard military side arm in 2077, in the Fallout Universe.

Another one that really never leaves my mind is the Upgraded Revolver from BioShock:

The thing on the barrel is supposed to help increase muzzle velocity, and the weird magazine added to the right increases the capacity from 6 to 24.

I know it's somewhat off topic, but I figured I'd mention it anyways since I don't think the average Member has been exposed to these types of "futuristic guns".

There are a lot of really out there guns in the Fallout series. Mini Nuke Launcher may be my favorite. Always wanted to try to make one of the pipe guns.

I watched the movie and enjoyed it but I took it for what it is, Holly Wood entertaiment. I thought Simmonds was excellent as the villain. The movie that made me want a longslide 1911 was "Thief" with James Cann, a very entertaining movie IMO. I have never bothered to obtain a long slide version though and just muddle along with the regular ones.

I think the single stack large bore auto pistols will come back round in the future, just the same way 7.62x51mm select fire rifles will. Advances in ammunition technology will allow explosive or other rounds which will require cartridges with more “payload”. Halo is a cool example of this idea. The MA5C rifle uses a quad stacked magazine and the 7.62 cartridge is needed due to the physical fortitude and advanced armor of the enemy.

Almost any handgun would be utterly useless when you’re facing an opponent who requires 7-10 rounds of full power rifle ammunition to be significantly wounded. How do you make a handgun useful in that situation? You give it as much foot pounds as human can reasonably wield, and an armor piercing 12.7mm projectile packed with high explosive.

As for the 1911, it would be hard to argue it’s an example of a futuristic handgun, but even in the eighties it was already proving how future proof of a handgun it would be.

I had not had these old Pachmayr grips on my 1911 for so long, I had to see if I still hated them.

If they didn’t do such a perfect job of impeding access to the magazine release I could grow to like them. I’ll be putting my Hogue slim checkered rubber panels back on, I think.
