I see a bunch of free float AR handguard/barrel nut for 160-200. Anybody making a decent kit for around 100?

You could probably find a cheap good quality quad rail if you want. Check eBay or post a message here, it wouldn’t surprise me if someone has one laying around that got replaced.

Look into these brands. Some of them have expensive stuff, but they also have cheaper lines that are still pretty good in the $120ish range.

Odin Works
Aero Precision
Midwest Industries
ALG Defense

I don’t have any personal experience with the ones linked to below but they get good reviews on primary arms.

For handguards I don’t skimp, I like Midwest industries, aero precision or BCM. But those are all $60+ what the expos are linked above.

The Expo Arms hgs are OEMed for Primary Arms by Cross Machine Tool. They're good to go.

These are also excellent https://www.grendelhunter.com/product-category/upper-parts/handguards/black-handguards/

I have a MidwayUSA ARStoner branded lightweight handguard. It is nicely made and around a hundred dollars.
I heard they were rebranded Bear Creek made handguards. Either way, much smoother than some I’ve had, without being slippery, as seen here.

I second Aero Presicon for a very worth-the-money upgrade. I have many but I wanted lighter this time.

I’ll also suggest B.KingsFirearms.com. They have a great supply of regular and Cerakoted handguards.
They are a great and fast supplier of affordable rifle parts.
RighttoBear. Com is another good source.

Quick question on these... are we in agreement that it is kosher for the barrel nut to be aluminum?

I think that is a question with conditions. I would have no problem with a properly heat treated and anodized 7075 or even 6061 barrel nut as it will be stronger than the threads on the receiver. I would not want an annealed Chinese barrel nut of unknown alloy.
