I have some 6.5x55 Swedish practice rounds, Berdan primed with the copper cup bullet. Has anyone pulled the cup and worked up a light load using the brass and Berdan primer?

Well I answered my own question. The brass is brittle, I cracked 20 out of 50 necks while neck sizing the brass.

I kind of thought I would get an answer from some old reloader on this board but I see there probably busy answering the same old questions about removing live primers and is silver brass safe to load since its not gold colored.

Either that or no one has taken the practice rounds apart and tried reloading them.

I purchased a case of 6.5x55, years ago, when I had a Swede. For range use and a supply of brass. It was reloadable. I forget the manufacturer, European.

It was FMJ. Turned out to be very accurate load. I pulled the bullets from 20 rounds and seated Hornady Ballistic Tips. Made an awesome deer round.

Being newer manufacture may have had some influence in not splitting or other problems. I have not ideal.

But, I have pulled and replaced the bullets, using the powder.

If you need brass. It can be formed from 7x57, 8x57, it any 30-06 descendant.
I don't use berdan brass. The primers are corrosive.

I have pulled a lot of wooden 6.5x55 bullets and reloaded (different powder and charge!) with jacketed. No split necks at all that I remember. Never tried the bullet you mentioned.

I don’t know if you can anneal primed Berdan brass. If you try it, make sure you have ear plugs and safety glasses. You might need to quench the neck in water so that the heat doesn’t keep traveling down the case.

When I was pulling the cups my hands got ahead of each other and I pushed a cup into the case a bit which split the neck. The splits I got when sizing the necks ran from case mouth into the neck.
I'm not set up to anneal not that I would anneal a primer case and this brass isn't worth putting the time into it for a shoot once and toss deal.
I've got 100 pieces of Win brass I can load for now, heck 100 pieces of brass might be all I need for a couple blinkers.

30 years ago I bought 500 6.5 x 55 cases, probably Winchester. They have lasted me this long. Although my 96's and my Ljungman they really don't get shot that often. Is 6.5 x 55 brass not available currently? It that reasons for the posts of making it from other cartridges?

There is one thing that I COMPLETELY despise about my Ljungman... I have to look up the proper spelling EVERY time I want to post about it! :cuss:

Brass is available though I don't like the price and I refuse to pay these prices which is easy for me to say as I didn't need anything until these rifles came along.
