So I'm getting ready to reload for my mosin rifle. I slugged the bore last night, and then set about measuring. It seems the slug came out oval as opposed to round. Anyone see this before?

As I take measurements I'm seeing from .308 to .318 and not very repeatable. It's not the tools, I checked them against my feeler gages.

Hmm... that's an interesting one.

First thing that came to my mind was, in the heat of battle, the rifle was ran over on the battlefield, by a huge, heavy German King Tiger tank, subsequently recovered and, because of the urgent need for any serviceable weapon, it was restocked and put right back into service with no other checks being done.

Probably a more mundane explanation but in my mind that's how that old warrior lived it's life.

Son of a pun. Looking down the bore it has three grooves, didn't realize I needed a different gage to read it. I'll call my machinist friend tomorrow, imagine he has v-blocks and would know how to measure this.

I did partially slug a .308 into the bore from the chamber. It came out with nice a nice even rifling. Think a 1944 Izhevsk might be a .308 and not a .311 ?

If you're looking for super accuracy by doing all these measurements, good luck. Even M-N's in great shape, the chamber is measured by locking the action with one in the chamber and then shaking the gun. If you don't hear the cartridge rattle, you got a good chamber.:what::rofl:

I jest. But these guns, for the most part, have been shot, and shot, and shot and..... things get out of round and barely within spec. If you can hit one minute of center mass at 150 yards, you did what the gun was designed to do. I've got a 91/30 and a M44 carbine. They're both fun to shoot, but I wouldn't enter a match with other shooters using 1903's.

If yours is .308 bore it's the first one I've ever heard of. Specs called for .312, but the +/- was, uh...larger than you may think.

Wartime Mosins, and Izzys in particular, are not known for exact measurements and finished machining.

I had a 1942 Izzy with a .316+ bore. Try loading a 316 cast bullet in a .335" chamber. That one introduced me to neck turning.
