Arrived 40+ years ago in standard-issue configuration. Replaced the barrel with a threaded one, got a trigger job, Hogue stock, and a (soon to be replaced) Nikon scope.

No... in my early days, it was putting on a bunch of aftermarket parts, including a carbon fiber barrel but then refusing to pony up for anything better than Remington Thunderbolt ammo....
You are not done upgrading until you have replaced every factory part and spent over ten times what the rifle cost. You then must use the most expensive ammo
