After umpteen thousand cast 255-240 grain cast lead handloads ususally over Unique powder as much as gun liked, I've switched favorite loads for .44 Spec. I have pretty much standardized on: 200grain Hornady XTP bullet , 7 grains of Win 231 powder, standard win large pistol primer. NOTE this is .1 grain more than some manuals reccomend , but hey .1 grain is lost in that size case and Winchester and Hornady says the pressure is less than 14000lb per sg " for 6.9 grains. This load has proven universally accurate in all my .44specials. It chronographed the following velocities: 2.5" S&W 296=890FPS, 4 5/8" Bowen Blackhawk conversion =980fps, 5" S&W Hand Ejector = 950fps, 7.5" SAA= 1010fps, Browning B-92 20"= 1110fps, and Rem 788 22"= 1090fps. I think that the powder is completely consumed around 16" or less of barrel and this load is quiet from the 788Rem especially, very near a .22lr. Of course pistols are A LOT louder. Now to the best part: this load is very accurate in all guns I have and EXPANDS to .64" out of the rifles at least on a deer I just quietly whacked eating my apples. In tests on goats even the S&W 296 expanded to .58" and penetrated 16" of flesh. The XTP is not as violent an expander as a Speer Gold dot, BUT the bullet supports the mushroom evenly and retains a high percentage of its weight. I use the XTP 240 and XTP 300 grain .44 bullets in my .44 mag reloads, all of which are high intensity loads. They have worked on deer and hogs well, the 300 has good penetration on Hogs and the 240 has good expansion adequate penetration on deer. But give me the 200grain XTP to get the most out of the .44special!;)

SHUCKS, I CANNOT IMAGINE NOT SHOOTING 240-250gr SWC

Bullets from a 44SPL sixgun. The 429421 KEITH at 950FPS does everything the 44SPL is capable of I do believe. In 35 years of shooting the 44SPL I have never even thought of loading it with jacketed bullets...never so much as crossed my mind...I'll be darned.

I agree. A bullet with a diameter of almost 1/2 inch does not necessarily need to expand. Hard cast is hard to beat in a hand gun for hunting, especially when you put it through the shoulder bones and cause some serious wound channel.
By the way, I'm new to your forum and just wanted to strike up some conversation with someone. Please don't think I'm trying to walk in your conversation.

I usually shoot 240gr hardcast swc's out of my 44 spcls. But I recently tried some 200gr XTPs over 8grs of Unique. Pretty good accuracy. I'm gonna give that 7gr of 231 a try.

For downloading the 44mag I use the 200gr, but for full power loads I use the 240gr XTPs over 24grs of W296 with mag primer. Great accuracy out of my Marlin 1894, and plenty of downrange punch.

Here is the deal, I believe: My S&W 296 is limited to 200 grain bullets  so I was forced to think out of my 250grain cast .44spl mindset. I tested all the available .44spl factory loads. The Hornady XTP load was better than the rest (the Corbon load was too blasty and that light 165 grain bullet too fragile, as was the Triton) as it was a little faster and the XTP bullet is very nice. The Speer Gold dots do expand , and well in the snub 296 but I wanted something to use in my other .44spls. I have other .44mags for real hunting chores and believe in heavy bullets for that duty. The 200 grain .44spl load kicks less than the 240s and up, and this is a plus in my fun shooting specials. I THINK OUR GRANDPAS KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING WHEN THEY DESIGNED THE 44-40 WITH THE 200 GRAIN BULLET! Still have adequate weight for penetration and (more room for black powder aside!) faster shooting!;)

Gordon-am liking the 200 Speer Gold Dots (speer web site supplemental loading data, max unique and V V-N350). Also like Hdy 180 xtp and Rem 180 sjhp over 8.5 gns unique. Use 9.0 gns unique under the xtp for max load, about 1000 fps from 696. All loads using standard Fed 150 lp primers. Am lucky if the 180 grainers expand to full diam from the shorter barrels, although this seems to change in the long barreled pistols and 16 in 44 mag carbine.

Most shooting is done with a 200 gn hardcast lrnfp, over 6.2-6.4 gns hp-38 for about 800 fps from 696(again Fed 150 primers). This is very close to same POI, as the jacketed loads.

Am using the above loads in numerous 44 specials, 3 inchers to 7.5 inchers..

If attempting pistol hunting, am going to rely on Ruger blackhawk or Bisley with heavier bullets in 45 LC.

Here's a load from long, long ago that's proven to be delightfully accurate for paper punching in my three 44 Special revolvers.

The Himmelwright wadcutter, LY #429220, weighs ~175 grains cast in 1:20. Use it over 2.8 grains of Bullseye in the 44 Russian case, or over 3.2 grains of Bullseye in the 44 Special case.

This mould, while long out of production, is not too difficult to locate.

Really funny to stumble on to this thread today. Yesterday I decided to use up some 231 I was given and loaded 7 grs behind a Lee 214 swc that I normally shoot with the same charge of green dot. Chronographed @946fps and outstanding accuracy, shot a couple 50 yd groups( off bags with a dot sight) that were right at 2" for 6 shots. The green dot loads are also accurate but not quite that good. Nick

Went to the range Friday and shot some light loads my friend made for my Bulldog, an original stainless version made by Charter Arms. Used 200 gr. flat points and 215 gr. SWC, both over 3.0 grs. Bullseye.

Nice! Really light recoiling loads out of that 21 oz. gun. No problem with 2" groups at 5 yds.

I still like the good old Skeeter load. 7.5gr of Unique under a 250gr Keith as my favorite 44 Special load. I just picked up another pound of HP38 though, I'll have to try that 7.0gr load of yours Gordon.
