A co-worker of mine has recently had some financial issues and is offering to sell me her S&W 60 in 38sp. It has the stock plastic grip, so not one of the oldies, I guess. I'm tryjng to get an idea of the year of manufacture, what would be a fair price, and any other important details. The partial ss# is BRP16XX, stamped on the butt. Can anybody help with this? I've had no luck poking around on the internet. BRP just doesn't seem to come up, although some other prefixes like ACT do frequently. Here is the gun:

I bought a 60-series pistol for my mom back in 1992, and it had similar (Uncle Mikes) grips. Your pistol does not have an internal lock (Hillary Hole...) so it's prolly in the mid-90's, early 2000's era. My guess.

Thanks. Hopefully that's a step in the right direction. I'm supposed to meet this woman at 11:00 tomorrow at a LGS. I want to have some information for her and I want to be honest about it. I'd really like to get that baby but I'm not sure I can match what the LGS will offer her if anything. Once or twice when I sold guns to them they gave me more than I paid for the gun.

Let's see...did not find any BRP serial prefix listed at all. Most of the B serials, from BAF to BUH are 1989-1995. BPR is 1993, BRF is 1994, could it be one of these?

BRR is 2001.

It sure does look like a P......but maybe it's an illusion?

Or could someone who worked on the gun have restamped it BRP instead of BPR by mistake?

One interesting fact about this gun is that the woman selling it to me told me that some time ago some ex of hers stole this gun from her during a move. She reported it, and it was returned to her by the police about 3 years ago. I've worked with her for a while and I remember when she told me that. It's not something that's just coming out now. Could something have happened to the number during that process?

I paid more for that new, a few years ago. Thats a good fair price, if on the low side.

I'd offer current market value which is a bit higher.

No, no, no. It is a Federal offense to alter a serial number.

I am finding a whole bunch of BXX prefixes made in 1994, according my SCSW 4th Edition. No BRP, but just about everything else. So I am going with 1994.

I am not going to guess at a price.

Ok. Thank you!
That might have got me a little further.
I guess it would be logical to assume that there is an upside down bell curve in price according to the time scale. The old vintage ones in good condition would be the most expensive and the new ones would be fairly expensive too. Since it's just about a 60-year-old model now, somewhere to the right of the middle has the low point of that curve is probably where the price of this one should lie.

2022 - 1965 = 57
57/2 = 28.5
1965 + 29 = 1994
...so around 1994 would actually probably be among the cheapest ones! Now how the hell do I explain that to her???

She was actually only asking $250 for this gun!
My guess is they might offer her in the high 300s to low 400s. And they might mark it up 150 - 200 beyond that based on my experience there.

I once sold a Bulgarian high power to this LGS. I only paid about $250 for this thing and they actually offered me close to 400 for it! I was blown away. It was actually an Arcus-94 Bulgarian hi-power clone. And they are actually considered tougher and more robust than the originals, able to digest a steady diet of +p+ 9mm right up around 357 Magnum levels.

$400 several years ago in the box with paper work and cleaning kit well used.

Everything here helps! Thanks everyone!
I'll suggest that she approaches them first for an offer and I'll see how close I can get to it.

Even if they "win" the bid, and she sells it to them, it's not unlikely I'll still walk out of there with something! :)

I might bring something along for a possible trade.

I agree that would probably be the fairest approach. But this was unexpected and I'm already stretching a little bit. There's a couple things I can sell to make up for it. Not guns, I mean. I'm also a part-time musician and I have gear that I don't use much. I even have a small collection of metal detectors, some of which don't get used much.

It so happens this 60 has a 2-in barrel. Personally I'm not very partial to barrels less than 3in. I've always been perfectly happy carrying and concealing guns with barrels of at least that length. Currently I'm carrying my 4-in Windicator for EDC.

If I did buy this from her I might be interested in finding a longer barrel for it eventually. I've actually been on the lookout for a sp101 with a 3 - 4" barrel for some time...but this 60 kind of partly answered that call. I really like the 60 almost as much as the SP.

You should have bought the gun right then.

People walk into a gun shop to sell a gun, all the time. Dealer/buyer should always ask " how much do you want for it".
Some answers are very surprising. Very low to "Blue book price".

If the customer wants an appraisal, in writing, that's different & costs $.

This is a decent lady that Ive worked with for years. She is on meds that have made her miss alot of work over the past year. Now she's struggling to keep her apartment and she's very distraught. The meds were for anxiety to begin with. Even though at first I was like "YES-sss!"...in my mind...I quickly realized it would be wrong to take advantage of her. So I want to give her a chance to make the best of it.

I ANY other situation though, for $250 I'd be NABBING that 60 faster than you could pull the trigger! ;)

I'll probably offer her $325 and if the LGS beats it so be it. I've dealt with them alot. They know me the second I walk in the door.

They will most likely low ball her. I would give her $100 over what they offer especially since she needs the money. You always want to be fair with ladies and especially widows.

The Good Lord will bless you for this.
