Quick question, does anyone still use the 1903 style sling with the sling and hasty loop fastening.

I pretty much always used the 1907 leather slings on my M1's and M1A's as a shooting sling. I do have one on my 03 as well. Ive used them as hasty slings as well, but the loop set up is the way to go if you're serious about using it to shoot with.

They are set up and used a little differently as a "shooting sling" vs a "hasty sling". You use the loop on the front portion of the sling and double the keepers up, so they act as a "lock" on the loop. The rear portion of the sling is unhooked from the front of the sling, but left loose in the swivel and just hooked onto itself so it stays put.

This will give you an idea as to how its done. There are some minor variations to it, but youll get the idea.

That is a desireable and beautiful combination. Do you know of any quality suppliers? Also that requires 1 1/2" sling swivel?
Thanx

Howdy,
I planned on using it on a newer rifle. Use it mostly for nostalgia and a feel for the styles of the past. Not good enough for competition, at least not now!!

Thank you Sir. I was taught the hasty style as a young un. The loop is interesting for the stability supposed on alternate position shooting. Thanks for that information!!

That is a very informative thread and thank you for pointing it out. I may have to change my mind. I saw a video of a US GI cotton web sling. The swivel clip was removed and it was assembled to two 1.25" qd sling swivels. It seemed much quicker to convert to a loop sling. Don't believe that can be achieved with a leather sling. Hmm on the fence. No problem, still waiting for rifle to be finished. Thanks

I've used a 1907 sling on my 10/22 squirrel rifle for the past 35 years. My preferred hunting method is to sit at the base of a tree in an area where squirrels are feeding. Using the loop steadys me up for the longer shots. Its enabled me to pick them off at up to 70 yards.

If this sling is going to be used on a hunting rifle, you might wanty to look into a "Ching Sling". They are a very simple sling that is quicker to sling up with than a hasty type sling and damn near as solid as a loop.

if you're looking for quick, yeah the GI web sling is an option. ching sling is good. the TIS quick cuff is great in my experience. something like the armageddon gear sling is fast and works great for carry too but won't keep your NPA over a long string of fire. i've got a large tote full of old gear and half of it is slings lol. lots of cool options but... its time has come and gone. i'd take a tripod any day now

As much as traditional and nostalgic as it is, it seems more cumbersome to make into a proper sling than the GI Cotton Web sling does. As much as I will use the loop in hunting and not regular target makes the difference less important. Undecided as of yet.... That sounds like some pretty good shooting on your part.

Looked at the slings you've mentioned and I feel as if the traditional 1907 or GI will be more to my liking and actual requirements. After a few shots I may change my mind and try a triipod myself.

Can’t beat a 1907 sling when properly used. My plt sgt shot 50/50 bullseyes, offhand, iron sights, at 300 yds, offhand ( standing) using a 1907 sling on an m1. We were shooting our annual qualification and he was just enjoying himself while we “worked,. He was the second best marksman in the company… the Gunny was the best!

Think it would have taken more than a sling for me to have shot that well offhand, even on my best days.... But as noted they sure do look correct. Maybe not so much on a Model 70 Featherweight.

My best days with the issue web sling I was a Sharpshooter. Some of these “old” men ( in their 30s) were really unbelievable. Several of our non coms got promotions when they retired because you retire out at your highest rank, and many had battlefield promotions I. WW2 and reverted back to their permanent ( enlisted) rank after the war.
