Hi all
Second question. I am looking to do some 30Carbine ammo for a GI Carbine I picked up. I see AA #9 listed. Anyone used it for 30Carbine? Would you recommend it or is there a better choice?

Plinking ammo with a 110grn FMJ bullet.

Thanks
WB

#9 is “OK” in the .30Carbine. If you have a “particular” rifle it might be the necessary ingredient. But velocity peaks well before H110/Win296.

My accuracy load is a Sierra 110RN over 14.5gr H110. It duplicates the WWII load of 15.0gr Win296. My hunting load/self defense is 15.5gr H110 under a 110gr RN Soft Pt. or Speer 110gr FNHP.
The 15.5 is current listed max and gets over 2,100fps from my guns.
I prefer PPU or GI brass... CCI or Winchester primers. (No Federal...)

Best deal on jacketed bullets is RMR!

For cast bullets, I’m using 11.8gr of #2400 under the Lee 93 gr RN (6cav mold) powder coated @.311”. Tosses brass over my right shoulder. Hits POI/POA.

No 9 isn’t going to give you the velocity of H110, but I doubt paper targets and soup cans will care whether they’re hit at 1600 fps or 1900 fps. It’s a tried and true magnum powder just like H110, IMR 4227, 2400, and Lil’ Gun.

My pet load uses W296 but when that’s not available the H110: produces the same results. I have used IMR4227 and #9 for plinkers quite a lot. Any of those will work fine. Look at the manuals and pick your ladder load around what kind of shooting you do. The listed loads in this thread are darn good information, and I can’t do any better than those. Good shooting.

I used it with the RMR 110gr just because. So far it has done just fine in 3 different rifles and my Ruger BH revolver.

The original load my pop used back in the early 70's was 14grs of 2400, I've also used 15grs of 296 as mentioned above. Use what ya have and load to the rifle.

Load data is very different between websites. AA data is a LOT higher then Hodgdon Data.

Have not loaded 30 Carbine. Using #9 in other cartridges found same.

My personal opinion is, the powder has changed since Hodgdon now controls distribution.

Or am i missing something? PSI is very different? SAAMI has 40,000 PSI.

I loaded up some 30carbines with AA9 and I got some weird results. I was getting over pressure signs, stuck cases and smashed primers as much as a grain and a half below the max.

What data was being used, If you remember or have in log book? Thank you.

Thanks all.
I am going to load a few up and see how they do. I have like 10 lbs of #9 that I don't have a ready use for. They I saw it could be used for the carbine and with some luck maybe I can get a load that will work for it.

It doesn't sound like you're planning to storm Pork Chop Hill with your trusty M1 Carbine so I'm pretty sure a few dozen fps more or less isn't really going to be an issue. If you have 10 POUNDS of No.9 then I'm also pretty sure using 15gr load isn't going to bother your personal supply chain so, I think you're safe and have at it. Kinda wish you lived around the corner so I could swap you some H110 for some of that No.9 but, I guess we'll both have to make due with what we got. ;) Have fun and be safe - not necessarily in that order.

I used Lil Gun in my 30 Carbine. Can't remember how much Lil Gun Powder but I do remember that I used the Speer 110 grain bullet. Haven't shot any yet, medical issures but as soon as I feel better I will get to the range.

15 gr?

I had a little AA#9 and tried it in the .30 Carbine, and it is OK. It's pretty much the same as AL2400, I wouldn't go out and buy it just for use in the carbine. I'm currently using Accurate 4100/Ramshot Enforcer and really like it. With it one can get very close to 2200 fps with 110 gr. bullets, which means loading them to the original spec (1990 fps) can be done at lwer pressures.

Exactly. I didn’t want to recommend 4100 because it has recently become Unobtainium but it is probably as good as if not better than W296. If you read the development history of Olin and Accurate, No.11FS is very likely St.Marks produced WC297; the flash suppressed version of W296.

But neither one of those is really out there and the OP said he has 10lbs of No.9 …

I loaded up some of them with the AA#9 (starting load from Speer and some with some old 2400 I had (Starting load from Speer). I got a couple of shots across my chrono before it crapped out on me. The AA#9 was running 1540ish FPS and the 2400 around 1440ish. Bot functioned the action reliably. With the AA load I did have a couple of cases eject straight back and hit me in the forehead. So I think I will go ahead and load some up using the AA#9 and use them.

Thanks
