Wood :
-I always recommend wood to a new shooter. Gun Fit to shooter allows them to better learn the correct basic fundamentals. This leads to hitting more of what they point at, instills confidence, lessens flinch-which leads to flinching, fatigue and missing.
-One learned, new shooters can Fit to task their stock needs. Serious Shotguns, Hunting / Shooting with heavier coats (changes LOP, which changes drop, cast, pitch...)
-'Sides, I Scuttle better, do a better J-Stroke with a wooden Shotgun stock.
I learn to scuttle and paddle with wooden paddles. Came in handy that morning the Plastic paddles broke being so cold, temps dropped coming in from duck hunting. Plastic paddles just snapped.
I have nothing against synthetic stocks. What I do see is folks with a gun that does not fit , they "scrunch" around the gun, ingrain incorrect form , leads to misses, razzing, disillusionment, sore cheeks, shoulders and such. Some quit shooting, hunting. There is the Rule of 96. Meaning if the syn gun is light with waterfowl / turkey loads - getting whacked hurts! Wood being more dense lessens felt recoil.
Assisted with fitting up a 1100 with Syn stocks for a Husband and wife for 3 gun. He runs a 12 ga, she being petite ( I mean petite) runs a 20 ga. She shoots better than he. We just took the measurements of their other 1100s, did some shooting, got to figuring, and these syn stocks fitted to 3 gun and similar uses. Reliable, tough, 1100s.
Some folks have sorta retired their SX1s , in the 3 gun games. In these uses of needing a gun to run - the SX1 proved ( still does) in 3 gun and other gaming. Plaxco used one for example.
Ditto for Beretta 303, great guns! Still not being made anymore...sentimental, whatever...
So folks use 1100s and let these others enjoy a well deserved "semi-retirement".
Personally - The way I shoot a shotgun, I want a "Traditional" stock. NO aftermarket stocks to absorb recoil. I learned to be very versatile with a traditional shotgun stock that fits. Flying, running, moving - targets I can hit. I can adapt very quickly to various shooting needs with one.
Aftermarket stocks of non-traditional configs, restrict my versatility. Yes there is a place for these non-traditional stocks - Tool for Task - if you will. I used to assist in teaching PGO and similar shotgun use, I still sometimes get asked for assistance. For the greatest percentage of folks, most only have 1 or 2 shotguns, these are to fill multiple roles, from hunting to clay sports, to HD.
I have busted six Nova's in one way or another. These do not fit everyone. Technically one has been busted twice by me. Same gun busted once by owner...trying to bust ice while duck hunting. He finally sold the gun, someone wanted it more than he did. Benelli was great about service, we are sure Benelli is happy he...especially ME is no longer using that gun.
Owner's biggest problem is it did NOT fit him worth a hoot. Now he has a $199 Express that has been fitted to him for waterfowl and easily adapted for clays, other uses.
Had a minor surgery this fellow did. I reminded him of the best kept secret he had, just forgot about. 1100 in 20 ga. With Bismuth he felled ducks. His wife was attracted to this gun, and she is not really into shotguns. She has since bought herself a 1100 in 20 ga - NICE Wood too! Got it fitted to her, and this middle 50's age couple, like a couple of kids dating. Only instead of going to the picture show, they go shoot clays, reload together, and the dog goes nuts when he sees a gun case ...dog helps them reload too.
Another often overlooked Good Looking Repeaters, Ithaca 37, Rem 11, Browning BPS. Basically same gun...dang does Browning know how to pick out wood or what!
Wood Stocks and White Line Recoil Pads - gotten many a waterfowler back in. - Old Mentor.
