Police: Man Pulls Gun After Oatmeal Prank

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) - A 20-year-old man who awoke after a party to find himself covered in syrup and dry oatmeal is the one facing a criminal charge after authorities say he turned a gun on the man who admitted pulling the prank.

Witnesses told police they were just trying to ``get even'' with Travis Maassen for pranks he had pulled in the past few days, according to a criminal complaint.

But Maassen ``freaked out,'' emerging from a bedroom Friday with a .22 caliber bolt-action rifle the complaint said. One man tackled Maassen after having the gun pointed at his head, the complaint said.

Maassen was charged with second-degree recklessly endangering safety while armed. He's on probation for carrying a concealed .25 caliber handgun, the complaint said.

La Crosse County Circuit Judge Ramona Gonzalez ordered Maassen held on a $5,000 cash bond Monday.

Hmmmmm It cannot be overstressed re: not pulling a gun, unless in fear of life, or great bodily harm I'm thinkig.

Dont point it unless you intend to shoot it.

On a side note... Wow 22LR and 25ACP, 2 contenders for most weaksauce rounds ever. Who uses either of those calibers for self defense willingly?

Perhaps you should have titled the thread; Man points gun at prankster and is charged. Man points gun at perp suggests that he had a legitimate reason to point the gun.

I'm not with Jeff just yet.

Too little info, IMO. What, exactly, is "a bedroom?" Was this Mr. Maassen's bedroom in his dwelling where he lived alone? Was the prankster an invited guest of Mr. Maassen's roommate (if he had one)? Did the prankster commit B&E to pull the prank? Did all of this happen in a third party's home? What, exactly, was the relationship between Mr. Maassen and the prankster. The important facts that separate justifiable self defense from aggravated assault are missing from the article. Add in the previous weapons violation, and it's even more difficult to tell. Maybe he was predisposed to acting violently and pointing guns at people, or maybe Judge Gonzales decided to toss him in the can because his previous actions tend to support the idea that he was waving the gun around illegally even if he wasn't.

But, the moral of the story is clear. Don't hang around with drunken partying criminals and you're less likely to be dodging bullets.

.22 and .25 suggest cheapskates who don't want to plunk down more then 100 on anything else then beer....one time my brother (a cop)
passed out drunk (he left his gun at home because he knew he would be drinking) at my sisters house and my brother in law gave him a mowhawk:evil: ..the pranks never stop with him and the inlaw both of them wrote "I love Kerry" (with a bar of soap) on my rental during the 04 election:cuss: ...the guy with the syrup shoud lear to take a joke.

For those that don't know La Crosse is one of the biggest party towns in the Midwest. They have lost something like 5 students to the river because they get so drunk downtown they fall in and die. Nothing that happens in La Crosse ever seems to suprise me. This guy is going to be hard pressed to call this self defense.

The setting for this story is that this was apparently a drunken party and this guy was the butt of a practical joke. As I recall, the responding officers also found some marijuana either in the residence or on one of the involved parties. No reason to bring out a weapon. Just some more of our young "adults" being really stupid.

As for our river drownings mentioned in an earlier post, what seems to happen is some of our young college crowd take in way too much alcohol, go for a walk along the Mississippi, fall in, and drown. Some of our stranger residents have been trying to put together the story that we have a serial killer stalking the college bars here in La Crosse. The reality seems to be that it is just really bad choices being made by people who even though they are 21 or older are just too immature to consume alcohol. Some of these young guys had bright futures and unfortunately that is gone for them and their families because they did something stupid.

Sometimes pranksters receive paybacks; in this case, syrup and oatmeal.

Sometimes paybackers don't take into account the sort of character of the prankster; in this case, threats with a rifle.

Nothing like a bunch of drunks and what's thought to be "fun".

Just blind luck it didn't wind up with a tragic end to a happy drunk.

Alcohol and guns don't mix well, mmmk?

Come to think of it, alcohol and most things (other than food, and the occasional cigar) don't mix well.

jmm

good, he should be.

You pull a gun on someone about to hurt/kill/maim/etc. you.

Not someone who shaves your eyebrows draws a little devil goatee on your face and superglues your face to the carpet. You do that you deserve to be arrested.

A bowl of warm water a digital camera an internet connection and patience to show the world that the hand in bowl of warm water while sleeping prank actual does work would have been much better.

It was a prank and his life was not in danger so he had reason to pull or point a gun at anyone and should be charged. Like the previous writer stated guns and alcohol are not a good mix.

"Alcohol" is not an absolute.

A more appropriate and relevant, albeit lengthier statement would be

"Guns (like most things) and amazingly-huge-amounts-of-alcohol-so-you-pass-out-so-deeply-that-you-are-not-awoken-despite-being-basted-in-syrup-and-oatmeal don't mix"
