I worked as a Quality Assurance Manager and then as Plant / Operations Manager for the largest privately owned spring manufacturer in North America for six years.

With the following assumptions, springs are not going to wear out.
A. The proper spring material is used for the application.
B. The spring is designed for the appropriate criteria: load at minimum and maximum heights.
C. Good manufacturing processes are used and followed. The springs need to be shot blasted, compression set, and tempered.

If the process is followed correctly you can leave the mags loaded for your entire life as well as your kids' lives and they'll still function properly. You can load and unload them every day for your and your kids' lives and they'll still function properly. There's lots of other things to worry about that are much more likely to go wrong than your springs wearing out.

Understand.... a spring is a mechanical device that can fail if there is a material flaw but I sure wouldn't worry about any mag from a reputable manufacturer.

I can say without a doubt that the springs in military issued M4/M16 mags will become absolutely useless if not unloaded occasionally.

Interesting statement. Completely false, but interesting nonetheless. Are you sure you've got "military issued" mags, and not some aftermarket crap?

The article VorpalSpork posted covered an alternative problem with Beretta mags.
 There is nothing Beretta specific about anything in that article.
