found a 696, no dash, at a local gun show today. i was a bit surprised at how little they were asking for it when i see bids upwards of $800, or sometimes more, on sites like gunbroker. i even managed to talk them down another $50. my bank account is $525 smaller but my gun collection is bigger.

do they make speed loaders for this gun?

gold inlay??

i gave the gun a good cleaning, inside and out, last night. it looked like the previous owner never did much more than clean the bore before i got my hands on it.

anyway, after cleaning the 'soot' out of the lettering grooves i noticed a gold colored material inlaid in all the lettering and the s&w logo. this is not something i have seen in any pictures of 696's before. did i end up with a special gun of some sort?

You frequently see gold wash in the roll marks of blued guns. I guess some folks think it's classy, I think it's a bit pimpy.

$525 is a screaming deal especially for a no dash.

yeah, but what about a stainless gun? was this a common s&w factory option or is my gun 'special'? i haven't owned many s&w revolvers nor educated myself on the nuances of the various models so i just don't know.

i was shocked to see one at the local gun show marked at only $575. it was hard not to show any excitement and blow the change to haggle the price down.

Bear41mag, you have an enviable pair there. alas, it is hard enough to convince the wife i need more than one gun let alone 2 of each. she yelled at me because she said i already had one referring to my 3" model 60 :uhoh:

You can buy something that essentially resembles a gold crayon to use for filling in the engraving. Brownell's sells them here. I bet that is what you are seeing.

srtboise, I am fortunate to have a wife who enjoys firearms and shoots often.
She is deadly with a .50 frontstuffer and her personal handgun is a Springfield Loaded 1911 45 acp. She laid claim to my Marlin Octogon Barreled .45/70 to deer hunt with a few years back and that was the end of that.

Couple of months ago I had the safe open and she was looking at my handguns. Her comment was "Your getting a nice collection, but not enough auto's" (she's partial to semi-auto's and I have not been able to refine her taste to revolvers as yet) So I went out and bought a Sig 228 and Norinco1911. Here only response was, "that's a little better".

I am truely fortunate man when it comes to my wife and her understanding and appreciation of my passion for firearms..:D

Bear41mag - Think you can get her to give my wife lessons?

That was the best part about it, she came that way and I did not have to train her. What's great about it is she gets excited when I buy her a gun for her birthday or Christmas.

Good catch on that 696. I had to pass on one last weekend at a gun show, didn't even have the money to try to talk him down from the $600 he was asking.

Didn't have the money because I just made a deal on a 2.75-inch 9mm stainless Speed Six, for $410. I think I did OK but some people may say it was a bit much for a used Ruger. Heck, I've never even seen one before and it just balanced in my hand so very nice. Plus, I kinda like moonclip guns.

Bart Noir

Bart, AIR some of the Ruger Speed Sixs didn't need (Half)moon clips for the 9mm rounf. Look at the chambers, if there is a half-moon shapped spring on the ejector you don't need the clips.

well, i heard back from S&W. the gun was manufactured in '97 and they dont have any information about the gold inlay in the roll marks. i was kinda hoping i stumbled on a limited edition 696 or something but i had doubts.

i will try to get my wife to take some pictures for me, i cant make her camera take good pictures if my life depended on it :banghead:
