Received an alert from NRA-ILA regarding Nevada Assembly Bill 21, sponsored by the Sheriffs & Police Chiefs, which would, if passed, effectively double the cost of CCW in Nevada.

Accordingly, I sent an email to all the members of the judiciary committee, copied to our district rep, as well as a pro-2A senator (Bob Beers) and a local conservative political activist, Chuck Muth.

Copies of this will be submitted to assorted media outlets.

Text follows:
Dear Esteemed Members,

It has come to my attention that an Assembly Bill, AB-21, whose
passage would effectively double the cost of a weapons carry
permit in Nevada, is being entertained in the Judiciary Committee.

Please know that I oppose this targeted and punitive effort to
deny access to the carry of defensive arms to persons of limited
means.

The very people who most need access to personal protection, to
wit: the elderly (who are very often on a fixed income), single
parents (whose income is often limited and already stretched),
and young women (who are often the target of assault) would, with
the passage of this bill, find themselves hard pressed to afford
the combined training and fees.

Those persons of limited means already have a steep climb to
obtain the means of self defense, in that a decent sidearm is
quite often a major expense. By stacking further expense onto
this already burdensome cost, many who would benefit from the
protection of a personally carried weapon, and whose ability to
afford this is already marginal, will find themselves unable to
overcome this new threshold.

The text of this message is being copied for submission to various
media in an effort to raise awareness of this encroachment of
individual rights.

Please reject this proposed legislation and hold the line on
further incursions into the rights of Nevada's citizens.

Thank you.

Another Answer

Got another answer.

"I'm with you on this one."

She also indicates she's working with another rep on CWP reciprocity.

Yet another rep answered saying he's "inclined to oppose" the bill, but never makes up his mind until he's read the whole thing. Sounds "reasonable" but I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah, I got the e-mail too, here is what I wrote:

Dear Representative,

I was recently informed of Assembly Bill, AB-21. This proposed action essentially doubles the fees that are required to obtain, renew, and possess a Concealed Weapons Permit. As a resident of Nevada and a constituent, I find this proposal unacceptable.

The trampling of human rights is quite often surreptitious in nature. By increasing the cost associated with obtaining a Concealed Weapons Permit that effectively limits those who are able to possess the means to defend themselves and others. As a full time college student, I found it difficult to obtain one at its current rate (one should not have to save up money for the right to defend themselves).

I call into question the reasoning behind such a bill. I find it troublesome to know that the very people we task with making decisions for our state would see fit as to introduce a bill into our legislature that would further limit the ability for the average citizens (in monetary terms) to obtain a Concealed Weapons Permit.

The right to self defense should not be infringed and charging exorbitant fees for the possession of such a permit is just that, infringement. I encourage you to consider this bill a direct encroachment on the right that all people should be afforded, the right to defend themselves from the evils of this world.

A new BLOG to track Nevada Legistlature-SECTION 11

Howdy!

Please go to http://art1sec11.blogspot.com It's my new weblog devoted to watching and reporting on A.B. 21 and other bills that may come up before the Assembly and Senate. I've got a letter from the Executive Director of the Nevada Sheriff's and Chief's Association trying to explain why they are seeking the changes. It's all horse sh*t. Read it and you'll understand that this really is an effort to curtail CCW's in Nevada and generate a lot more revenue!
