The K Frame

Guess I'm a member, I've got a sweet M19 with a 4 inch barrel, and I just picked up a hospital cop trade-in, parkerized M15-3.

Tripod

B'REF,

That 66 is purty!

What beautiful grips. What are they?
(And that's coming from a guy who prefers synthetic grips.)

May I suggest that you don't need a better camera as much as you need a tripod.

If your camera (digital, I'm guessing) has mounting hole for a tripod (just look on the bottom for a threaded hole less than 1/4" in diameter), then go get even a cheap tripod from Bimart.

Pick up a cable shutter release as well so you don't have to touch the camera to snap the image.

Once you immobilize the camera, the sharpness of you images will improve remarkably.

(Of course, this is "do as I say" advice, rather than "do as I do". Since I got my little snap shot Olympus and got away from doing 35 mm with my Olympus OM-4, I haven't been using my tripods as I should. My gun images posted on THR show that. :( Post-script: I just went and dug out my Bogen's from the storage area. Time for some new gun photos. :D )

After that, you can start looking at Nikons.

(But if you're really going to get a better camera, spend some bucks on a good tripod, too, at a good camera store where they can show you the features. I recommend Bogens. I have two of them.)

Then, you can take some more pics of that 66! :D

Thanks for the camera advice. I should probably read the instructions that came with it some day
The grips are Hogues that I picked up on eBay. I'm not sure what wood they are, but I got them for $51.00 shipped :what:

I have 3 K-frames
- 4" nickel model 19
- 4" model 66
- 4" model 65

The target is some fast shooting at 15 yards, practicing drawing then failure drills.

Ahhh, so that's the connection between K-22 & 617.
I think Jad explained it to me recently, but it didn't sink in ... until now.

True, but ugaarguy did a better job of explaining it.

Some additional info (it may be a tad off, others feel free to tweek it):

The original K-Frame based 22 was introduced in 1931 as the K-22 Outdoorsman. After WWII when K-22 production resumed (it ceased in December 1940), the Outdoorsman name was dropped in favor of "Masterpiece". The Masterpiece name may have been used just before WWII, I'm not sure.

Though the Model 17 and 18 designations were added after '57, they were still known as K-22 Mastepieces.

K-22 Combat Masterpiece (post '57 Model 18): 4" barrel, discontinued in 1986.

K-22 Target Masterpiece (post '57 Model 17): Mainly 6" barrels, though an 8 3/8" length was added in 1958 a 4" heavy barrel was added in 1986 when the 4" Model 18 was retired. In 1989 the no lug barrel was dropped in favor of a full lug

I'm not sure when the 617 came into the fray and if it replaced the Model 17 or if they were sold side-by-side for a number of years. I'm also not sure if the 617 retains the "K-22" designation like the 17s and 18s did.

I am pretty certain that the 617 is a K Frame. The easiest way to tell would be to hold an L Frame and a 686 side by side and compare the frame width - if the 617 is noticeably narrower, that would seem to confirm that it is a K Frame.

... while looking at Michael's posted (#27) images,
I suddenly saw the Model 64 3" (.38 +P)
as an "intermediate" revolver between
my 642 snub and my 686 .357 mag.

Da'um. This club is going to cost me money.

Ha ha ha! You really are in trouble! Well, we must think alike because I know you've heard me talking about adding an intermediate sized 357 revolver to my small collection one day for IWB or OWB carry. The S&W 2.5" and 3" K Frames fill that roll beautifully, as you've just discovered! Perhaps it's blasphemy to mention it in the K Frame Club, but the Ruger Security/Service/Speed Sixes in 2.75" fit the same bill.

While I'm here, I might as well submit my TWO applications to join The K Frame Club. Now all my guns have a club :D except my lone auto Springer XD9 :( ...

Here's one with grips that are a little uncommon. Model 19-5 2 1/2" round butt with Bianchi Lightning grips which turn it into a Bodyguard configuration. Great gun, very comfortable grips.

Ah, the responsibilities of being a club "president".

But such an enjoyable responsibility. :D
_______

I have a minor suggestion about images. I'm like President Uga: the images are of beautiful guns. I want to see more. (Even though my bank card says, "Quit looking! :fire: )

Yet, when so many full images are posted, it really slows down page loading time (and I've even got reasonably fast DSL).

What if we try to post thumbnails only without copying the entire image into the post itself? We can click on thumbnails repeatedly to see our favorite guns, but not have to wait for those we've already seen to load every time we come back to the thread.

This is NOT a complaint at all. I really like pics, and mea culpa - I like to post pics of my tool kit. (I don't have any K-frames ... yet ....)

In fact, it could be just a suggested guideline with no penalty for those who post the entire pic.

Just thinking out loud.

What'da'ya think, Uga?
