Greetings all. Due to ever increasing ammo costs, I've started seriously considering buying one of these units. Seems like a great way to get practice with the AR platform on the cheap. Are the conversions reliable? What kind of accuracy do they offer compared to the original chambering? Any info and insights would be appreciated.

I'm not familiar with these units. Are they a replacement upper assembly with correct barrel for 22lr. If not I would think accuracy would be marginal to bad as well as fouling and or plugging the gas vent hole in the standard upper assemly.

I don't know how much a dedicated .22LR upper is, but the conversion kit is 140.00 with a ten round mag. Tack on another 40.00 if you want the kit with a thirty rounder. Extra thirties are 59.00 each.

i'd recommend the ceiner conversion for the ar15. i've put a TON of rounds through mine. it eventually failed the chest-high drop test though. oops.

you can buy 30 round polymer mags for $15-20 that are much better than the original ceiner mags.

accuracy is good enough to shoot tin cans at 50 yrds.

only major downside as far as my experience was as i reported previously, when you switch back and forth between them, your upper and lower receivers get full of that gritty, sandy crap in 22lr ammo. my previous bolt carrier was polished by it to a mirror finish. when i built a new upper last year, i swore off the ceiner in that gun.

I love my Ciener (link here If you have a C&R, get it through Brownells to save a few $$). I mostly use it in a surplus M16A1 barrel (1/12 twist) with a Flattop upper and Bushnell Holosight. This sort of mimics the setup of my two 5.56 carbines. Once in a while, I use it in my M16A1 clone.

It's very reliable and tons of fun. I have some 30 round mags from Black Dog Machine: http://www.blackdogmachinellc.net

Those rock! :) The only problem is keeping it fed.

Thanks for the input guys. Any recommendations on specific brands of ammo?
What barrel twist rate is everyone using? I know you said you use 1/12 with good results, DMK. I'd be using it with a 1/7, at least until I build my A1 and M4 clones.

1/7 is good. you'll be able to shoot the agila SSS 60 grainers too

I've got one.

I don't use it a whole lot, it leaves the upper filthy.

Works OK, but the .223 bore is slightly larger than what's correct for .22lr, so you're not going to get uber accuracy.

I think maybe w/ a 30 rounder, I'd use it more. .22lr out of an AR begs to be shot fast, so you literally spend more time loading mags than shooting.

My .22 AR:

It's accurate enough for plinking and shooting mutant zombie ninja squirrels, about all I ask of it.Fed a steady diet of Wildcats,it's very reliable. It's not too ammo picky,it'll cycle almost everything including Blazer except for the cheap Remington Wally World bulk pack and honestly, the only auto loading .22's I have that like it are a Marlin 99M1 and S&W 22A.

I got a Ciener conversion last summer and LOVE it. Get the 30 round mags - the 10's go way too fast.

Also get the Lakeside spring set - most people who have trouble with a Ciener kit replace the springs and that solves the problem most of the time. I dropped the spring set in before I even shot the conversion and it's worked like a charm. I have about 500 rounds through mine and it has been FLAWLESS - all types of .22 ammo and no issues at all. I'm afraid to clean it since it's working so well :D

After I shoot the conversion I'll put the .223 bolt back in and shoot a mag to blow out the gas system...then clean as normal. Great little setup for the money.

1/7 is a bit fast for 22LR. It really depends on the bullet you are using. Most 22LRs are 38 or 40 gr. For those 1/14 would probably be better, but AR barrels with those twists are very rare (and worth a premium to a collector). A 1/12 twist M16/M16A1 barrel is easy to find and usually fairly cheap.

1/9 will work, but it's not going to stabilize 38/40gr. very well for good accuracy. I've only shot mine out to 25 yards and it did OK. I never thought about using my 1/7 twist barrels. Hmmm, I need to try it in my M16A2 clone.

What twist rate are you using? My M16A1 barrel is no tack driver, but it does 1" - 1.5" groups at 50 yards with a red dot. That's good enough for anything I do with it. I can ping on little 3" metal poppers at 50 yards all day long.

Yea, definitely. Black Dog Machine has a 6 for the price of 5 deal. I really need to get 6 more. Those 180 rounds go way too quick.

Bought one this past winter.

I broke down and got one ths past winter and have put a few hundred rounds through it. It shoots POA at 25 yards but now that the weather has gotten warmer I'm going to stretch it out to 100 just to see what the accuracy degradation is. I'm using it in a 20" H-Bar, 1:9 with NM sights. I bought it mainly to work on trigger control and follow through.
