Lapse of Federal Law Allows Sale of Large Ammo Clips

April 16, 2007 2:30 PM

Brian Ross and Dana Hughes Report:

High capacity ammo clips became widely available for sale when Congress failed to renew a law that banned assault weapons.

Web sites now advertise overnight UPS delivery of the clips, which carry up to 40 rounds for both semi-automatic rifles, including 9mm pistols, and handguns.

"High capacity magazines read extreme firepower and gusto. Stock Up!" is the headline of one of many gun shop Web sites.

Virginia law enforcement officials have not identified the weapon used in the shootings today at Virginia Tech, but gun experts say the number of shots fired indicate, at the very least, that the gunman had large quantities of ammunition.

"When you have a weapon that can shoot off 20, 30 rounds very quickly, you're going to have a lot more injuries," said Paul Helmke of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

I find the user comments below the story very interesting to read. Sounds like there are a lot of THR'ers out there.

This is laughable, absurd, and stupid. Does it matter if he had (3) 15 round magazines? After the '94 AWB, all pistol magazines were limited to 10 rounds. So all this deranged individual would have to do is carry (5) 10 round magazines. This will solve nothing when it comes to crime, its pure stupidity.

This just goes to show how these idiots think, its laughable and absurd.

Yep, they said he was wearing a vest with alot of pockets. It wouldn't have made any difference, sounds like he had the ability to carry alot of rounds either way. There was even a student describing how quick he was reloading, sounded like he was reloading the magazines not just the guns.

It doesn't matter what capacity magazines he had. If you are in a room full of unarmed people you can reload all day long and nobody can stop you. On that campus he could have done just as much damage with a revolver.

I heard something to that affect as well. Reloading a mag obviously requires both hands. There is absolutely no way I would have stood there while he holsters or puts his weapon down and reloads rounds one by one into a magazine.

Actually, I think the point here is that by enacting laws that limit gun rights, they are only limiting the rights of citizens to legally own these guns and magazines. They are not limiting the criminal's ability to illegally own these guns and magazines. The bad guys are going to have the guns and magazines whether they are legal or not, I would certainly like to have mine legally to protect myself from those bad guys.

Criminals generally can't aim at all, so having more bullets to miss with probably won't help.
