OK, I have an early 80s nickle 39-2.

Should I shoot it (I do), or is there some collectability to it that will diminish with use?

And, what is the history of this weapon, was it originally designed as an alternative to the 1911?

thanks,

Shoot it, but take care of it, do not use a copper remover on it, that will remove the nickle. In NIB condition and with the box and all the tools it would be a good keeper, but it makes a nice gun to shoot if not NIB. S&W was designing an Autoloader and they are great makers of DA triggers and it carried over to the 39.

This was my Dad's, I got the box, original instructions and an extra clip. It had Pachmyer grips on it for years, the originals (walnut?) are at my Mom's house, the grips in the photo are Hogues.

Yes, they did submit it in the early 1950s. The 39-2 (the "-2" meaning a second iteration with improvements - e.g., a feed ramp dimensioned to feed hollowpoint ammo - over the original) was introduced in the late 1960s or early 70s, I think.

I would go ahead and shoot it, but in moderation and no +P ammo, which it was not designed for.
