Hi Everyone,

My fiance and I are moving to Georgia around the end of August. We've had it with California and have decided that Georgia is where we will go. My question to all of you is about moving my safe. I have a 400 lb. safe that I would like to take with me. We may be using one of those POD moving companies, and would like to know if this could be placed in the pod? Can you give any advice on companies that move safes across country? Any idea of what it would cost? Thank you.

I don't see why you couldn't put your safe in the POD (the contents of the safe might be another story, read the POD terms). Another option is to call around with a couple of manufacturers and find out how they ship their safes.. again, shipping the contents of the safe (guns, etc) might be problematic.

I made pretty much the same mistake a few years ago and wish I could dissuade you.

It sucks here.

There are better places to retire to from CA.

Good luck.

I think neoncowboy is trying to keep Kalifornians from going there and imposing thier views and way of life which they hate and want to leave behind on those already there. At least that is what usually happens ;)

Why haul the safe? Sell it there and get a new one when you arrive. Probably would work out economically by saving on paying to ship the "oversize, bulky, and heavy item." Have done this with shop tools etc. and usually come out alright.

How much is the safe worth... replacement wise. I would be inclined to sell it, and buy a new one here.

Have you looked into having a 40'container delivered instead of a POD? It is a hell of a lot cheaper, and you could put your safe and guns in that. No 'co policy' crap.

sell and buy if possible. PODS are great, but try moving it yourself into the POD!

moved from GA last year. I miss it at times. Lived in Athens, then Atlanta. I will warn you... it is HOT there... I never realized how hot until I moved to NJ. 90 degr everyday from May until Sept. of course here it is cold from Oct till April.

Gun wise it is a great move... you will love it.

Thanks for the replies. We will be moving to the Savannah area. The safe is worth about $600. May just sell it and buy a new one.

shipping of gun safes

gun safes are covered with cardboard, with internal corner protection, mounted on wooden skid through common carriers.
safe must be secured or blocked in. they fall over very easily in shipment.
almost universally damage results from the fall or the equiptment used to set back up.
23 years moving freight

Savannah is great. Atlanta sucks, but most of the rest of Georgia is great. It is fairly hot and humid though.

FYI, my fiance is from Georgia. We don't plan on imposing CA views on anyone. Just live and let live.

I will agree.... Atlanta sucks. I live in Conyers, and Conyers sucks worse. I would love to move to TX or somewhere in the middle of the US. Its too damned hot and crowded here.

I've moved my 1000+ pound safe 4 times. I'll warn you that there is not a moving company around that knows what to do with a safe. They invariably use contract employees who have never had to move something like a safe.

I've never considered using a POD. I'd guess that so long as you strap the thing ever so tightly to a corner of the POD, it might work. But don't even think about putting guns, ammo, or anything valuable inside it. And if you don't wrap it in moving blankets or the like, it'll be scarred for life.

My safe is now so beat up from incompetent movers that I figure I'll just have them move it to give them a challenge.

I would sell it, even at a small loss the headache saved would be worth it.

You could sell it after you have all your other valuables out, then you could have the buyer move it out:)

I am about an hour SW of Atlanta, I like it here. Have visited Savannah, would like to live there if it were not so far from family.

I have lived in both CA and GA. I liked it better in GA. I would not want to live IN Atlanta. I lived for four years in Alpharetta which is north of the I-285 circle about 14 miles. As long as you stay away from downtown Atlanta, except for quick visits, the area is okay.

And it will probably be cheaper to sell the safe, save the shipping cost, then purchase a new one.

Atlanta itself is no longer REALLY a part of Georgia (or maybe I should say it's no longer a part of the South). The Savannah area is a good place to live, though, and the gun situation here is GREAT!

One problem with moving companies in general is that the insurance they supply for your goods in transit is based on the weight of those goods. That means if they damage or steal something, they only pay like $1 a pound for the loss. A $1000 gun may only weigh seven or eight pounds.

Moving companies have a well deserved bad rap. They often higher cons and many are run by people who have criminal records.

I like the idea of some kind of storage container you can load and unload yourself at your convenience. Might not work so well if you are going from apartment to apartment without some upfront work with the apartment management.

Another scam with moving companies is they often lie about the cost to pack and load your stuff. They also frequently add on charges they demand you pay before unloading. If you do not pay, they have your stuff and will keep it. The police can't do anything because it is a commercial matter, and not a crime. You pay, or they keep your stuff, and they add on storage charges for every day they have your stuff.

Safe moving is a skill that few places have. Most sellers of safes have people they contract with to move them. I would contact a local safe seller and see who they use to get it put in the moving container, and a safe vender at the other end to get it moved into your new digs. Selling it and buying a new one when you get there might be a more feasible solution as some one else suggested.

Met my wife while stationed in Warner Robins. Savannah is too hot and humid for me, as is most of S. Georgia. N. Georgia mountains are fantastic, if I could relocate economically I would head there in a heartbeat. Little places like Ellijay, Tallulah Falls, Hiawassie( sp)

The wife has relatives down around the Collins-Reidsville-Vidalia area. Good quail and dove hunting there.

I wish that was the case, but lo and behold now it is the "Dirty South" and arguably the Mecca of the rap world.

I would love to move to TX or somewhere in the middle of the US. Its too damned hot and crowded here.

Do it man. I just moved from Atlanta to Houston. All in all the weather is pretty similar, but it feels alot better to me cause Houston actually has breezes, all the roads downtown aren't blacktop, and there is actually greenspace within the city. Traffic is also a lot better. Funny thing is, everyone in Houston complains constantly about the city. They don't know how good they've got it.

figure out the cost of moving it vs the cost of selling and buying a new one.
Don't forget to factor in a "hassle" factor.
Piano moving companies are great for this sort of thing.

Oh and learn to drink "sweet tea" <grin>

As far as Texas being hotter.... I have lived in Plano, TX and it was better. The winters are colder, and it is no where near as humid. A 100 degree day there is like a 80 degree day here. Plus it has a lot more wind :p I would move back to Plano in a second if I could right now.

Unless the safe is something that is too small for your needs, I'd move it. I've never had a problem. But you do need to make a decision relative to the value versus cost to ship (due to the weight). I moved a bunch of lumber that I had stored in my garage once, and when I realized what I was actually paying to move it... it was a pretty poor decision.

Savannah is okay if you like the old south. It is fairly humid there. If your planned move is not dependant on a specific job opportunity, I would consider Tennessee.
