Before the first batch of carbines went on sale lots of people were saying they were overpriced and poor condition and it would take a long, long time for them to sell out. In fact they only lasted 18 days. Prices are only going higher.
I didn't say that CMP wouldn't sell out quickly; I said that you'd be able to buy those same guns at gun stores and shows and online auction sites within a year of the CMP sales, and for prices about the same or less than CMP. Lots of people are rushing to buy from CMP, so CMP will sell out quickly. The total demand has not increased, however, and lots of those CMP sales will get flipped in the market before long, resulting in a substantial increase in supply. With supply rising and demand relatively constant, prices will fall; it's simple econ 101. And if you wait to buy in the open market, you'll be able to personally inspect lots of examples, choose the ones in best condition, and negotiate price. I've been buying nice M1 carbines here and there for $400-750 for the last few years before the CMP sales were announced, and the ones I've been buying are nicer than the ones CMP is offering. For example, I got a real nice Winchester in excellent condition two years ago for $600.
But if you want to rush off and order sight unseen from CMP, then be my guest. I'll continue cherry picking the best ones at good prices when I find them.
CMP hasn't offered bargains on anything in more than a decade. There was a time when DCM/CMP guns were bargains, and you could get real special examples. Nowadays, they price them at or above the market, what they have left is, for the most part, the bottom of the barrel in terms of condition and collector desirability. When CMP does find something special, they auction it off to the highest bidder.
