What is the legal/proper way to legally sell a firearm? Since we're talking about a federal law, I'm guessing it's pretty standard from state to state.

Sorry if it's a dumb question. I've been away from firearm trading for some 20 years.

If it matters, I live in TN.

Unfortunately, it does vary greatly by state.

Federally, you cannot sell any guns across state lines(unless to an FFL), nor to anyone you have reason to believe is a prohibited person/non-resident of your state.

however, many states have other rules. In MD its illegal to sell a pistol or "regulated long gun" private sale, but other long guns are fine.

If the residence of your prospective buyer(s) is Tennessee and they're of legal age, the feds don't care.

SFAIK--but don't just take my word for it--Tennessee is the same.

Not so. A non resident of one state can buy a rifle in another state. This is true of most states. Only a few states restrict out of state purchases.

I, as a resident of one state may purchase a hand gun in another state. I have to supply a FFL holder in my state of residence in order to have the hand gun shipped there.
