Dove season....coming

I'll be headed to my buddy's place for our annual dove get together in Waco this year. Hope it's as good as last year was! Wow, last year was fantastic!

I'll be heading down to Sandhills Gamelands near Pinehurst, NC again this year. My Father in law and I had a good hunt down there the last couple of years.

I was just invited to a friends land for dove this morning (of course I said yes but I dont know how the wife will feel )

We're going to look for a little corner of somewhere that others won't go.

Dove opener here is INSANE. Fields lined with hunters every few feet, like fishermen on a crowded city pier, and some hunters in the brush in the middle of the field (hope they're wearing kevlar). And the areas are typically hotter than 110 degrees F; last year it got to 117 where we were.

And that wasn't even on a weekend.

openingday here in nc is the day before my birfday and since i cant spend the second hunting (sunday hunting is illegal here in nc) i will be spending the first and the 3rd on the croatan dove fields

ArmedBear, I couldn't hunt like that. I gots ta have space. I guess that's the good thing about hunting private land.

That was the first time I ever went to that spot. Probably will be the last. I was curious. But clearly, many people do go there. It's the official Place to Go on dove opener. Go figure.

There are lots of other options. I scouted one this morning. We need some rain.

Jeez, you can have OUR rain. Wow, been raining for several months. Just got through pouring down in fact. Wish we could ship it your way.

If it's dry, look for a tank..er..pond with fresh water to hunt in the evening. The dove will fly there for a drink before roosting. It's so wet in Texas, the water hole ploy will be a waste of time.

I'm hoping to be in Houston opening day- how's the moisture content there looking? I'll be on a bunch of land out near Cypress. Will I need waders or a float for my icechest? How about a pool skimmer to retrieve birds?

Moisture content of what, air or soil? Actually, probably about the same, saturated. BWAAAA, ha, ha! There's so much water about, the dove ain't gonna have to look for it or focus on a given tank. Probably being near food or roosting will work better than a water hole. It's sorta drying up a tad, though, finally, but they're talkin' about rain maybe this weekend again. At least it ain't every day right now as it was during May, June, and July. I still have a little hope that the Guadelupe River will drop below flood stage before teal season starts on the 15th of September, if we don't get much more rain by then.

Supposed to be up to high 90s temps this week with very high humidity, so you can leave your sweaters and coats at home. LOL! But, you knew that. Not sure where you are in Texas, but it's all about the same, I reckon, 'cept trans-pecos. Those folks just don't realize what humidity is. It has been unusually cool down here, though, this summer so far, because of the rain and lack of high pressure over us. I think that's ending, though. If it's wet, it's cool. If it's dry, it's hot. Catch 22 I guess. But, all the coolish air has done my electric bill pretty right this year.

Are y'all still getting rain? Its been about a week since it rained in North Texas. People are starting to complain about it being dry.

It's been dry for about a week now and it's beginning to finally dry a little. Still can't mow part of my hard, though, and my place is still 4x4 or dirt bike only, will be for the rest of the year even if we don't get any more rain.

Guadelupe river at Bloomington (been keeping an eye on this because it affects my teal season) is finally on the way down, only 4 feet over flood stage now.
