Billboard be gone from the GP-100 barrel! PICS...

It's almost surprising that Ruger even makes a gun with a 2.25" barrel (SP-101). It limits the amount of text they can put on there...

I would like to see the pictures again, after you take off the edges on the trigger.

Trust me, a court would disagree. Just because another manufacturer doesn't put such warnings on its products doesn't change the fact that one has been removed from this one. You can argue that it wasn't necessary, and that you didn't make the gun less safe, but I wouldn't bet the farm on winning the debate against a good attorney. Anytime you remove a safety device you are assuming liability.

Nonsense a warning to read the manual will not make you liable or not for the negligent actions of another third party. DO you keep the manual wire tied to the gun??? If you dont then wont that make you liable, also???

How about those trigger tags that come with most guns, that say read the manual, do we need to leave those on as well???? The purpose of the warning is to protect RUGER from allegations that its product was lacking in safety features. The warning is to prevent RUGER the manufacturer from liability, not to protect a subsequent owner. I doubt that it has spared ruger a lawsuit, or even made a differenc in any suit filed against ruger.

Fine, fine, fine (hands in air).

Maybe you are all correct and there really AREN'T judges and lawyers out there waiting to nail you.

Halvey... I wasn't watching the clock, but I did id one evening. The dremel time was probably about 10-15 minutes per side.... pretty quick. The hand sanding was what took more time, perhaps an hour on each side. Then polishing another 20 minutes on each side. All in all, not a major project.

Ruger won't even work on a gun with changed springs. There's no way in the world they'd work on a gun with a barrel that had been modified to remove the safety warnings

This is real stuiped. No gun is going to be perfect for everyone. Trigger jobs are very common and can make a diffenct on how useful a gun is. What is next, no night sights?

You'll have to call Ruger to discuss that -- it's a fact that they won't service a gun that's out of its factory configuration or has non-OEM parts. And no, I don't guess they apply that policy to sights -- but if you search here and at Rugerforum you'll find quite a few examples of owners who have run into this policy.

No biggie... it's easy to swap parts from other GP-100's, if that would even ever be needed, which I doubt it ever will... among my numerous guns, this one doesn't see a lot of use... actually none of them do as I rotate shooting them so much.

Looks good! :)

Wondering if it's a no-no in CA, though:

"It is unlawful to change, alter or remove the serial number, maker's name or other identifying mark from any firearm, unless one has secured the written permission of the Department of Justice. Possession of a firearm with altered identifying marks creates a legal presumption that the possessor committed the offense."

Possession of a firearm with altered identifying marks creates a legal presumption that the possessor committed the offense.

Seems like that means guilty until proven innocent. Wonder if that one would hold up under a court challenge. It's one thing to alter the SN, removing that billboard is entirely different.

Fantastic job, really. When you first posted the pictures I started asking around at some of the local gun shops to see if anyone had a decent deal on any GP-100's, and got a phone call this morning.

Went and had a look, and the revolver is identical to the one you so magnificently polished. Seems a fella bought it, couldn't abide by the recoil and to the back of his safe it went.

He used it as a trade-in last Friday, and thankfully the owner remembered my inquiry. Now, to be honest, I couldn't tell if the gun had ever been fired, and the store owner plunks down a box of Federal's with the remaining 8 rounds inside. Fella shot 12, and even brought the unused bullets in with the gun. Hadn't filled out the warranty, didn't even peek in the expended shell casing envelope.

And now it's mine. $266.25 out the door. Not a bad deal, I'd imagine.

Thanks for the inspiration,

Gunny

I'm reviving this thread because DHart's method is interesting and I just got through with an email exchange with a gunsmith which brought it to mind. I've got a Ruger SRH Alaskan I like in some ways but not in others. It's a .44 and just has too much mass out front for that cartridge. What I'm thinking of doing is rendering it slightly "slab sided" and erasing the warning label and brand. The good news is there's a bunch of steel out there to work with. The bad news, as explained by the smith I talked to, is that it's not one piece but rather a barrel screwed into a heavy shroud. So it makes custom work tricky and expensive.

Which reminded me of this thread, and the possibility of spending some quality time with the thing and a dremel tool. Even an ounce or two less off the front would really help balance.

So how about posting a "before" pic before you get started? Sounds like a fine project. I keep thinking I'd like to get the billboard off my 4" GP100. Just haven't had the time to tackle the project.

Actually if you are careful and you maintain the radius while sanding, it turns out quite nice. I have done it to my 3" GP-100 and my shortened Redhawk.

Oh sheesh, when you sell the gun just print up a couple cheap return address labels with the warning on it and stick it to the gun. Take a picture of it on top of the day’s paper to establish the date. Whoever buys it will pull the sticker off and then it’s their problem.

Why so many of us live is such fear is beyond me.

Well, all my Rugers are pre-warning, so nothing to do there - but I just tore all my mattress tags off to show solidarity with you guys!

Cleaned SP101

I did the same to my SP101. Did all the work by hand, afraid the Dremel tool might get away from me. Did a little "dehorning" while I was at it.

I then sent it to the gunsmith's to get a new front sight added and get it modified for moonclips. Along with action tuning I went with his recommendation and had the entire thing bead blasted. I think this really finished it off nicely.

those sure look better without the markings.

is hand polishing necessary when there's a dremel handy? ;)

anyone know if a sp101 with hammer can be changed out with a dao hammer? simple swap, or are other changes necesary?

Thanks guys for bringing back this topic...gives me another chance to post my Ruger minus the billboard. Um...I did not even like the round barrel...had it slabsided and all the writing removed.

bigmike45,
What was the original length and modified length of the barrel on your Redhawk?

archangel,

The gun started out life with a 5.5" barrel. I cut it to 4", recrowned the barrel, and installed a new front sight with interchangable blades. Of course, this was before Ruger copied me and many others,:p and came out with their own 4". Theirs however, is not, and probably will never be in a .41magnum, like mine:D.

For those who didn't notice my brainfart in the post above.....the first revolver is a GP-100 and NOT a SP-101.:banghead:

DawgFvr-that gun looks awesome with the slabside barrel!

If you don't mind answering, who did it & how much?
