I'm curious what experience you guys have with barrel profiles and what you think I might like best. It will be a 16" barrel, rifle length larue rails, eotech...its just for range fun, maybe a class next year, and I guess defense if I'm having a really bad day. I'm tempted to get the lightweight barrel but wondering if I'll find the balance will be odd or if it will just heat up too fast.

I've got both, and I like both. I really do like the feel of the lightweight. It does heat up quicker, but it also cools off quicker.

Bomb,

For me it came down to the handiness of the rifle. I bought my 20" in HBar and 16" in M4 profile. I've never handled a 16" HBAR, but I very quickly bought a 20" GI. I shoot a lot of standing & some offhand and the GI beats the HBAR hands down for this.

Like MM said, it heats up quicker & cools down quicker. Mine is primarily a range rifle so I leave the bolt open between mags. It cools off very quickly.

(MMcfpd = Million cubic feet per day?)

Have had both. My 1980s Colt CAR-15 was the lightweight. My recent Bushmaster M4gery has the handy dandy grenade-launching capable govt. m4 style.

I prefer the lightweight, and if I ever need to replace the barrel that is the way I will go. But so far I have lost very little sleep over it.

The 20" lightweight A1 profile is handy dandy, and I don't think I'd want anything heavier in a 20" unless I was shooting competition.

My preference would be a gov profile 16" midlength gas system, which would be lighter than a 16" carbine because more of the barrel is under the handguards. Or a medium profile of some sort.

This one is a 14.5" midlength gov profile, and it balances great.

I love my Bushey lightweight carbine. I prefer the balance over the M4grys. I dont have a M-203 to put on one (uncle sam wouldn't let me keep mine)

I built a 14.5 inch lightweight for my 14 year old daughter. She loves the weight, and it still does 2 inches at 100 yards with commercial ammo (64gn Winchester PowerPoint). Groups open up slightly after a magazine, but sill better than any Mini-14 I ever owned.

I have a 16 inch M4 profile on my own M-forgery, and it shoots under 2 inches all day long.
