I have written AARP twice to ascertain their position on ownership of guns by private citizens but as yet I have received no answer. I have heard generally that they are very anti gun, but have no found hard evidence to support this claim. Does anybody have any information on the subject?

Gun Control
AARP believes in the Constitutional right to bear arms. But to make the nation safer, we must do what we can to keep guns out of hands of children and criminals. AARP supported the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, which went into law in 1994 with bi-partisan support, but was allowed to expire this year.

AARP supports measures to eliminate firearm possession by juveniles, convicted domestic abusers and those under domestic violence restraining orders.

National Organizations With Anti-Gun Policies

The following organizations have lent monetary, grassroots or some other type of direct support to anti-gun organizations. In many instances, these organizations lent their name in support of specific campaigns to pass anti-gun legislation such as the March 1995 HCI "Campaign to Protect Sane Gun Laws." Many of these organizations were listed as "Campaign Partners," for having pledged to fight any efforts to repeal the Brady Act and the Clinton "assault weapons" ban. All have officially endorsed anti-gun positions.

Their position on gun control has changed over time. When I turned 50 about 2 yrs ago, their gun control position was much more in the Brady camp. Their current position has shifted from the extreme position they previously had. I'd like to think the shift was due to many potential members telling them that we wouldn't join as long as they were in "the other camp".

I still haven't joined.

"Their current position has shifted from the extreme position they previously had."

The AARP position has not changed one bit. AARP has the same draconian gun control mindset that they implemented decades ago. The only thing different now is the fact that they have become more adept at hiding their real intentions. The AARP is totally opposed to CCW.

I was an AARP member for a year. When it was time to renew I called and questioned them on their anti-gun position. Needless to say, I didn't renew!

The AARP is basically a marketing arm of Colonial Penn Insurance Company. Their job is not the lofty ideal that they espouse in all their literature. It is to make money and provide a power trip for a handful of their "executives".

When the AARP took their position on the Brady Bill, my mother wrote them a letter and asked them to not quote her (a member) until they had consulted with her on her views.

Do not send them any money. Ask to be removed from their mailing lists.

I specifically tear up and throw away any AARP stuff I get in the mail due to their politics - and gun control is just one element of that for me.

Dont tear it up=====send it back with a note telling them you wont join as long as gun control is on there agenda .
If you put a few washers in the envelope it raises the cost to send -costing them more postage -!
I get aarp stuff all the time -I hate them

I find it difficult that as many Jewish organizations anti-gun positions as they do. All I can think of is "short memory" when I see this.

This is by no means meant to be offensive in any way, it is just an observation.

If the people many of these organizations supposedly represent were to actually be polled, I think you would find the rand and file do not agree with the positions taken by the organizations. That's why you will find Jewish groups, doctors' groups and others that were formed specifically to support gun rights. Those groups on the list tend to take very liberal political stances on almost all issues, and don't represent the views of their membership any more than labor unions do - they only reflect the views of their executives.

I agree, they are in support of the Brady Bunch and are anti RKBA. I am only 38 and they keep mailing me unsolicited info. My parents are both in their 70's and were FORMELY members. Since they received their CCW licenses, they have cancelled their membership with my advice.

Every time I see the list of organizations who are "anti gun" it reminds me how paranoid most of us look to mainstream US. Rather than try to influence organizations that are overwhelmingly positive we make a feeble attempt at blacklisting them.

* though it does make me smile that my American Legion magazine advertises 1911s and K98s.

Monetary boycotts are actually a very good tool when they are well publisized.

Good idea. I always send their junk back, with a comment about their anti position being the reason I'll never join. But adding to the cost with bonus weight is great.

Like most mainstream leftist groups, the AARP has dialed back their anti gun rhetoric because many on the left believe it has hurt them.

For most of the left, gun control is not a major issue. Sure its something they want, but its not one of their top tier issues so they've put it on the back burner so as to not sacrifice the stuff they REALLY want to do for it.

If a (D) wins the White House and the (D)s still control the house and senate, expect to see gun control brought out and dusted off and put right up front (in part because many Democrats will use it to "punish" those darn "red staters" for DARING to keep them out of power this long).

It depends on who the target of the boycott is. The AARP is a friend of the DNC which controls the MSM. So the publicity of a boycott of the AARP is going to be spun as; "Look at the crazy gun nuts picking on the old folks."

I'm Jewish, and I am even more perplexed than you. It is literally a form of insanity, IMHO, for Jews to be opposed to the individual RKBA in light of historic events (and not just the Holocaust/Shoah). In addition, it is contrary to Jewish law to consciously (or through negligence) to put yourself in a position of not being able to defend the greatest gift that G-d gave you - your very life. Of course, most of the Leftist Jews, politically speaking, are extremely Reform or even agnostic/atheistic, so the religious argument would hold no water with them.

Oh, BTW, no offense taken. Facts are facts, and an infantile and suicidal view of self defense and defense of liberty needs to be exposed.

Not Washers but information

Due to my advanced age, I receive mail from the AARP (in fact they include their membership information in my Human Events publication - go figure!) and I always reply (it is return postage paid) with a short note about the reason I will not join and I include some relevant item copied from a JPFO or
2nd Amendment Foundation publication.

The way I see it, a real person on the other end opens the envelop and they just might read what I send them and it just might open their eyes.

I used to send back a comment to AARP in their own envelope that stated that I didn't support unconstitutional organizations...

I finally decided that the only thing that doing so probably accomplished was to have the same, fanatically anti-gun people tone down their comments and lie more about their extreme anti-gun position...

Now, I just toss their crap in the trash.

When an AARP official testified before a legislative hearing in New Jersey, he strongly supported what would have been effectively a ban on gun ownership. When asked if AARP members might not need to defend themselves, the AARP official stated that "those senile old bats shouldn't be allowed to have any kind of weapon."

I am sure AARP would deny that he stated an official position, but it is nice how organizations stand up for their members.
