"As a single woman who lives alone, Shafman says she's the perfect pitchwoman for Taser as it makes a renewed push to sell weapons to families."

The article HAD a favourable aire for self-defense----but this bit I find troubling from a THR - RKBA approach:

"And unlike other weapons, she says, Taser forces its customers to submit to a criminal background check before giving them a code to turn on their weapons."

Back-ground checks-----OK-----there are benefits-------but activation codes??!! No doubt similar tactics to be pursued with "smart'-gun technology!

Thats all right Ill still keep my " tupperware" Mine is usualy rollmarked with Kahr , but Springfield or Glock may show up occationally lol .

"I got tired of being pushed out of people's offices," she says. "Nobody wants to purchase a product that they think is lethal or going to kill somebody."

I wouldn't say NOBODY:rolleyes:

There are a lot of folks here who still have the great wheelgun vs auto debate going on, with capacity and reliability being two of the central issues with a defensive arm. comparatively a tazer has a capacity of 1, is effectively non-reloadable during use, and requiring a pin# and batteries are not conductive (hehe, a pun:D) to reliability.

While a tazer can be a useful tool, IMO it is better suited to LEO work than concealed self defense, but hey, better a phazer than nothing, and it is good that someone is encouraging others to take up the issue of self defense for themselves.

I wonder how many rules of safety are overtly violated at these "taser parties" under the disturbingly dangerous assumption that LLD's (less lethal devices) cannot injure or do very serious damage.
LEOs undergo extensive training in the use/application/deployment of all LLDs, not just tasers., when suburban housewives start treating them casually without training, its a recipe for injury. I wonder what kind of training these taser party hostesses receive?

what no fatalities from riding the lightening at partys yet? wonder why.... could it be cause for the most part they have removed the real causes of "TASER DEATH" ie the meth coke or agitated state that causes folks to occaisionally croak during an arrest

Long time ago, while I was in the Marine Corps, a buddy bought a taser for his wife back home. He wanted to test it and make sure it was effective. So he and another buddy paid me $17 to be the guinea pig. Felt like id been kicked by a mule! I was young, stupid, and a few extra bucks was always helpful.

But im guessing thats not the kind of party you're talking about.

They were talkihg about the taser parties on Fox this morning. I was really discouraged to hear one of the talking heads say that he didn't think they were a good idea because someone could just take it from you and use it against you. Deja vu.

The female talking head was actually enthusiastic about it, and was hoping to be invited to a taser party.

My wife sent me a link to this yesterday. I told her at least they were learning how to defend themselves. She said she thought it was a pretty good idea. I told her "Yeah unless there's more than one guy trying to rob them, then their screwed." Or just one criminal with a gun. But considering its against the law for criminals to own guns you'll never have to worry about that. Cause there's no way they could carry one.......It's against the law afterall.

I hear you Doggy Daddy, why is it whenever someone mentions a weapon for self defense there's the obligatory: "Oh, they'lll just take it from you and use it on you" And the way its said is like 100% of the time that's what's going to happen, like some guys gonna come up to you:

****** bag-"Hey gimme your wallet!"

Me- "Oh no! Stop! I've got a gun!"

****** bag- "Er.....I see............can I have it?"

Me- "What? Uh.............yeah sure, here you go!"

****** bag- "Thanks!"

*BANG* *rumage, rumage*

****** bag- "Got you wallet, here's your gun back."

Me- "......................roooooose bbuuuuuuuudddd"

Taser

I have some real problems with "the majic Taser" (silver bullet) idea. Being prepared for self defense is a no-brainer, whatever methods are used, but, as posted above, practice at a "Taser Party" isn't reality. We, on this and other gun/self defense sites, constantly discuss all the needs and ramafications of what self defense is, and nobody expects a limited range, single shot anything to be adequate. If that is all you have, so be it, but that is not considered even basic self defense. How much would you bet, that the Taser will be in a purse, and just guess what draw/presentation time would be? Can you say "Too Late?" As a professionally used intermediate stopping tool, they look great to me, but not as primary/only means of self defense. Every lady needing a Taser should have a big, ugly, well armed escort! :D

Semper Paratus (also)

The idea that an unskilled person is going to hit a moving object with a 2 probe 15 ft range ***** {tasr} is really stupid. If they miss or the perp has a ski jacket on, he's really going to be pissed. And bieng that the thing costs between 100 and 300 bucks a pop, there sure ain't going to be much practicing going on. I think the money could be better spent on a 22,25, 32,38 caliber weapon that will do the job with a little practice, and they have pretty colors now, too.

Has anyone else noticed how long it takes a woman to find anything in their purse? (My wife, anyway!) Seriously, I think it's a great idea. Many ladies are scared to death of a gun, even after a range trip. Would provide peace of mind, anyway.

I had a "taser party" once.... Once. :)

Basically me, my brother, and my brother in law were hanging out in his garage. Brother in law had a new taser. I decided to be an idiot and say something along the lines of "dude, I bet you it doesn't hurt that much". He assured me it did ( he himself was tasered before being given his taser). I countered with a witty remark. He said, "wanna find out?" I said yes. He said "are you absolutely, positively sure??" Again, I said yes. So he told me to sit on the floor so I wouldn't fall and break my face, and told me to tell him when to zap me. I said go, and the next 5 seconds were what I like to call a "learning experience". hahahaha. Honestly, the pain wasn't that bad (it was bad, but not as bad as I thought it would be). What bothered me the most was the fact that I felt that I had zero control over my body, and was convulsing a bit. I also felt very weak afterwards for like a min or two. Other than that though, it had no long term effects. Probably better than getting maced. However, I'm definitely not doing THAT again. But yeah, I was 19 and stupid. Now that I'm almost 22 and working on getting into law enforcement, I am definitely "looking forward" to the day I have to ride the lightning again at the police academy, or for taser certification...

good times, lol.

All jokes aside though, IMO, while a family having a taser is better than nothing, I would much rather see them with some other form of tupperware. Preferably something firing a center fire cartridge of the hollowpoint variety. I view tasers the same way I view mace. It's an extremely useful tool that can get you out of situations where lethal force may not be justified, or where you are not in immediate mortal danger, but when somebody is breaking into your house, or pulling a gun on you, a taser is a poor substitute for an actual firearm.

Guys, there's tasers (they shoot things into you) and there's hand-held stunners (those irritating things that they keep zapping at gun shows).

They both have their places. Personally, I suspect that more often than not, a taser will be dragged out in a domestic situation - "SOB wouldn't get out of the recliner and fix the light bulb, so I zapped him!"
