My grandfather recently gave me a collectible 1911 as a gift, and was the original owner. He didn't have any real information on it (it was given as a gift to him as well), and has never fired it. I'm trying to find out information about it. It has a serial number of C224XXX, and the grips are ivory with an eagle on each side. The slide and other metal work are very ornate, with scrolls all over it. The barrel is also decorated, with what appears to be a "checkerboard" pattern.

Any information that anyone could give, or a point in the right direction, would be greatly appreciated.

Get an account on something like imageshack.com, then host that picture there, and do the "picture" thingy.

I'd immediately guess it was a Colt Gold Cup of some sort. But then again, I'm no scholar on the matter.

I would build a frame, with a false back to hide the dessicant packs, lube it, wipe it down and frame it/hang it.

It is worth some serious money, and will never be worth less.

I would definitely get a factory letter from Colt to properly document this gun, and also to see where it originally went after it left the factory. I think the address is Colt, Inc., Hartford, CN 06102 c/o the Historian. I'm not sure how much it runs, but it would be well worth it.
