Not counting the cost of the firearm, magazines, range bag, etc...
What is the typical out-of-pocket cost to participate in an "average" handgun competition at your local club?

My local club charges $25 for non club members and $20 for club members.

Usually 6 stages or so.

I figure about $20 for match fees, $20 for ammo, $20 for gas (no matches closer than 1 hour away), and a few bucks for lunch. Ammo is sometimes less, but often more. I figure on 150 rounds minimum. I'll sometimes re-shoot if it an option, which adds to the cost ($5 for the re-shoot + ammo). Gas can be less if you share rides.

You mean everything included?

For a one-day local match, USPSA rules: Usually $20 for the match fee. Around 150 miles round trip, gas is around $15. $10-20 for food, depends if I stop for breakfast. Around $15 for 150 of my reloads. Total = $60-70.

For a major one-day match (USPSA area match, major steel match, one-day multigun match): Usually there's more travel involved, call it an average of 500 miles round-trip, or $50 worth of gas. Meals on the road are $25-40. Ammo varies a lot depending on the event, call it another $30 (multigun matches are more like $100.) Match fees also vary, but $100 is not out of line. Total will be around $250, plus another $75 or so if a motel stay is in the cards.

National level matches, expect to spend seven or eight hundred dollars once the plane ticket, hotel, and rental car are all taken care of.

This isn't a cheap hobby.

Feeling fortunate

I didn't realize how lucky I'm am. I can shoot 3 different IDPA locations 3 out of 4 weeks each month and not drive more than 20 minutes. Couple boxes of Wally World White Box 40's and $10 dollar registration ($5 for a re-shoot) at each site and I even get to reclaim my brass.

I would still be involved even at higher cost. IDPA is possibly the best training you can get at a civilian CCW level and it's the most enjoyable excuse to shoot that I've found.

IDPA is available at 2 clubs.
$8 gas (30 minute drive to either club).
$10 match fee (waived for 1st timers).
$15 ammo (75rds 9mm).
$1 disposable earplugs
$3 drink/snacks (my lunch)
---------------------
$37 total per outing

And it nearly wipes out a Saturday.

Ammo is the biggie for me and more rounds are required for other types of competition. Club membership is not expected, but they like you to join IDPA if you're going to be a regular. $40/yr.

The Bullseye Matches in the area are $35.

The three that I attend are 50-60 miles away. (3 gals. gas ~$10)

Food: brought from home, or ~$5-8 for bought.

Ammo: 180 rounds re-loaded .45 (~$25-$30)
90 rounds .22 (God I love the price of .22s)

Grand total: ~$80

$20 in ammo and $20 in gas.

Depending on the match $15-20 for the match fee.

There is usually two or three of us in my car, so it gets even cheaper.

IPSC/IDPA/3-Gun is still cheaper than the shotgun games like SC and Trap.

Under optimum conditions of health and weather, I can readily shoot IDPA at the club level seven times a month. Travel of 6 to 135 miles, 50 -100 rounds a match. If I drive my passenger(s) buy me lunch and vice versa so as to not have to be so crass as to charge gas money.

The Bullseye matches in this area charge $20 for the range/entry fee.
Plus $30 for ammo (180 rounds of .45 and 90 of .22)
Anywhere from $10 to $35 for gas depending on which club I go to.
Usually pack a lunch so it runs around $85 for a typical match.
This weekend I'm heading to Amarillo for the Texas State Indoor match. 300 miles one way and $50 to enter, but heck, I get to see the grandkids and and there's no motel cost since we stay with the kids for the weekend.

Hey!

My club shoots IDPA and charges $20 for the match ($15 for classifier) and that includes a pizza & soda lunch.

Other clubs around PA mostly charge $15 match fees for club-level matches.

Major or "Sanctioned" matches with t-shirts, prize tables, trophies, and 10-12 stages are running more like $85 - $90 for entry fees.

I'm driving anywhere from 30 min. (my club) to 2.5 hours to a match, so call it between $5 and $25 for gas (in my Civic :))

With today's gas prices, You must be eating Filet Minon for lunch then! :D

NRA sanctioned Bullseye matches might have $25-35 entry fee. What I call 'practice events' cost half that. Up to 270 rnds fired. (90 of Match grade rimfire, 180 of Match grade centerfire) ~$25 But most matches offer cash winnings. Even the best shooter won't shoot for free, but good shooters get something back.

Our club shoots Pins or Falling plates once a month. $15 match fee, with a buck on the side for fastest clear time. Could be a couple hundred rounds of ammo. Plates is much cheaper to shoot than Pins.

Our local Varmint Rifle shoot is also $15, with 30% of match fees going back to the top three shooters. 100rnds of Match grade ammo.

Travel and lodging expenses..

For me, it went about like this.

2 boxes of .38 Special ammo, $25. It's gone up since I was active and I shot IDPA. IPSC usually has longer strings.
About $20 in gas.
$20 for the match.
