I too live in NY (upstate just outside Albany) and want confirmation or refutation of the fact that a bayonet lug on a VZ-58 rifle is not legal in the state.

I have heard they are not, but, just want to be certain of my facts. I will probably follow up with a call to the NY ATF branch on Monday as well.

Thanks for the education.

here they give the ny definition of assault rifle.

a rifle with a removable magazine may not have two or more of the following features.

pistol grip, flash supressor, bayonet lug, grenade launcher, or folding or adjustable stock.

one feature is ok, two would be two much fun.

i think the heller ruling will effect this as well, as we are allowed to have common military style rifles it seems.

One thing that's important to discern first here is if the gun is a pre-ban firearm. Those rules don't apply to rifles "lawfully possessed prior to Sept. 14th 1994". Pre-ban guns can have all the goodies you want in NY.

In fact you can build an AR for instance with anything you want on it , as long as the receiver is a pre-ban. Most people don't realize it but gun stores in NY can and do sell pre-ban configuration firearms.
