So I inherited this rifle from my brother who passed away. The only markings are what I have pictured with the exception of the serial numbers (006###) It's chambered for .30-06. The only thing i've found on the 1909's is a 29in. barrel military surplus gun. This obviously isnt that. Any ideas? The only thing i've done to it is added a Leupold scope. Just wondering what exactly I have here as I'm not familiar with Mauser's other than I love to shoot/hunt with this one :D

Thanks,
Jared

Aww, used to be an Argentine 1909 military-spec Mauser, one made in Argentina rather than as part of the German Contract, and it's been butchered.

If the original military barrel is still on, even chopped down, chances are your .30-06 is actually a reamed out 7.65 Argentine chamber and the rifling is better suited to .311 bullets than .308.

Shame it had to get chopped, but at least it's usable in some fashion.

I was afraid of that. Not sure if my brother bubba'd it or not. Knowing him, he probably had no idea what it was originally. Probably a pawn shop find. Maybe my pops will know something more. The serial numbers match and the barrel is i'm guessing about 21" or so. So are you're saying it'll accept something other than .30-06? Same case, different bullet? It's pretty accurate for my skills. I think last time I shot it I put a ~2" group @ 100yds. Thanks for the ID Vaarok!

He is saying if it has the original barrel, the bore might be .311" instead of .308". So the rifle will shoot the .311" bullets with fine results, but .308" bullets will probably be unsatisfactory. And since most if not all .30-06 is loaded with .308" bullets you might be stuck with an innaccurate gun.

Ahhhhh, now i'm trackin'...might have to eye that Remington 700SPS a little more seriously now. Thank you, sir.

If the barrel has any funny little characters stamped on it, like two hands shaking, or a snail shape, it's the original military one. If there's a brand name or caliber stamped on there, and no funny little picture stamps, it's probably a new barrel installed.
