As a resident of the Draconian State of Illinois, I haven't had the right to carry a weapon concealed, until next week when I go on vacation and my Pennsylvanian concealed carry permit can finally be used while travelling through the great states of Indian, Ohio, Tennesse, Kentucky, and Georgia.

I am looking for advice/ guidance for the novice in CCW. Any lessons learned in the art of concealment, clothing wear, holster wear, types of holsters, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I have a Glock 21 or I can use my wife's Glock 19. I am leaning towards getting a holster made from Kydex. What do you use?

I have plenty of experience in OC while in Iraq for 16 months, I never had to worry about concealing anything there. Go figure, it's in my own Country :)that I have to hide it.

Thanks

For Glocks and Kydex I like the Comp-Tac brand, the Infidel model in particular.

For CCW I prefer IWB, especially this time of year.

That's a lot of state laws to be familiar with. I'd stay with the speed limit.

First and foremost: Know the laws in the states in which you are traveling!!!! They are all different.

In Texas as long as you make an honest effort to conceal you will be OK. If it prints or the wind blows your shirt up it’s no big deal. Some places will bust you for failure to conceal if they so much as catch a whiff of Hoppies.

Here they have to post a sign in accordance with Texas penal code 30.06 (somebody in Austin has a sense of humor!) to keep you off of the premises. Anything else doesn’t matter. Some places they can write it on the bottom edge of a door and hang you.

Not knowing such things can get you in a world of hurt so tread carefully.

I carry a Ruger P90 in a Minotaur MTAC holster IWB. It’s kydex on a leather paddle. Very comfortable and the kydex makes re-holstering a snap.

Ditto. You'll have an easier time concealing the 19 than the 21.

I have an XD45 compact that's not unlike the Glock 19 in size when using the 10 round mag. I use a Comptac C-tac IWB. Works like a charm under a short-sleeved print shirt worn over a tank-tee. Sometimes I'll just use one button to make sure I don't flash.

It's a fast drawing son-of -a-gun, too.

Or, jeans W/ a light sport-coat, weather permitting. That's a nice casual look that doesn't seem to get much attention, or look too out of place.

Enjoy your trip.

Practice around your house before you go out in public to find what methods of CCW work best for you.

The Wal Mart walk is a rite of passage for those new to CCW. Many of us had some concerns about our abitity to adequately conceal a firearm. The Wal Mart walk is a way to get your feet wet & convince yourself that most people A) Don't notice or B) Don't care. Also it gets rid of the fear that someone's going to scream "Oh my Gawd he's got a guuuuun!"
when you appear in public.

As for the advice , go buy yourself a good leather holster and a GUN belt not a Wal Mart dress belt. Get something that actually designed to hold up a gun.

After that it's placement sometimes moving a gun a half inch on your belt makes all the difference btwn CCW & You might as well open carry.

First off, thank you for serving!

BTW, if the idea of hiding it kinda irks you (it does me once in a while), you can always check the laws on open carrying in the states you are traveling through: www.opencarry.org.

If concealing...

On cover garments, I find that a baggie, longer shirt with patterns (not solid colors) makes concealment much easier. So if you normally wear a large, try and XL-T. A tight fitting "clingy" shirt in a solid color will print even a tiny Kel-Tec. But a larger shirt with a pattern makes 5" 1911s vanish. Also, if you are going to carry using an in-the-waistband holster, you may find it necessary to buy pants one size larger. I normally wear a 34 or 36, but my IWB pants are 36 or 38.

In addition to a good holster, be sure to get a nice sturdy gunbelt. That applies or concealed or open carry. I got mine from thebeltman.com, and love it. A nice gunbelt makes weight disappear, even my 1911 which probably weighs close to 3 lbs loaded.

Check your law; some reciprocity rules apply only if you are a resident of the state the permit is issued. The FL permit is probably the most popular for non-residents.

I plan on printing out the reciprocity memoradums for IN, TN, KY, and GA and having them with me during vacation just in case I need to explain myself. Pennsylvanian has all of these posted on their Attorney General's website along with all of these states gun laws. I will make sure every T is crossed and I is dotted before CC in the respective states.
