I like to keep large-ish quantities of ammunition on hand, and I have been storing it loose in metal ammo cans. Mostly it stays in my house, in a moderately cool & dry place, but when I'm going to the range (or in case we get in a land war with China :D) I just grab whichever calibers I'm going to be shooting and head out.

Is this dangerous? What are the chances of a round going off? I'm nice to the boxes, I'm not dropping them or shaking them (as if I could, they're heavy!), but there's nothing keeping the rounds from bumping into each other.

They won't be going off like that.

And even if they did (which the won't) nothing will happpen. A bullet needs to be fairly tightly contained to cause any appreciable damage, which is why we invented gun barrels to contain them. :)

If one somehow did manage to cook off (which it won't) it might have enough energy to dent the case(s) of the rounds next to it, but even that is pretty unlikely.

I was especially concerned thinking that if one somehow goes off, it might set off the rest... in a sealed ammo can, that could be pretty significant.

I like seeing all that ammo at once! Brings smiles to all the liberals faces! I don't think it is dangerous as stated above. But if you want to you can buy some boxes for them.

Back when I was into Skeet and trap shooting, I used coffee cans to keep my shells in. With these new plastic ones today, they would be even better.

I thought you'd snuck into my house and took a pic after I had sorted out my last ammo order. Then I noticed the carpet was different and there was no 7.62x39. :)

Don't worry about the ammo going off in the cans while transporting... I've ordered thousands of rounds of the bulk pack Speer .40 Gold Dots from Ammoman and they come in 250 round loose packed cartons. If they don't get set off from the UPS handling, no amount of bumping should set them off prematurely.

Hey bnkrazy and azhunter122,

It is awfully nice to know no matter what happens, I'm pretty much set for ammo. My buddy has the can full of 7.62, and he's pretty liberal himself, so we're both doing our part.

I've also got a can of .45 Colt, but it's almost empty... waiting for the 500 rounds I ordered to arrive. Maybe one of these days I'll buy a rifle in a big boy caliber. I do love my shotgun and my .22s, though.

Thanks for the info, all of yous.

ohhh...pretty pictures!
I shoot my handgun ammo way to fast to build up enough to fill an ammo can. My rifles all shoot surplus, and that usually comes in boxes or wrapped in paper and string(like a present!) and it stays like that till I shoot it. I always shoot that stuff in multiples of 20rds so I never have partial packs or loose rounds.
