Does anyone here carry a back up weapon such as an ankle holster or just something in your back pocket? If yes what is it?

Off Duty, as a "Primary" I mostly carry a 3" GP100. I have been known to switch it out and carry a Glock 19 or a 5" 1911 on a few occaisions.

For a BUG I carry a 2 1/4" SP101 loaded with 125 Grain SJHP's. One of the reason I chose this gun was ammo compatability with the GP100. The SP101 is carried behind the weakside hip in a Kramer horsehide MSP Paddle. The Primary is carried in a Milt Sparks Summer Special II behind the strongside hip.

The third gun is an Airweight J-Frame with a 1 7/8" Barrel either on the ankle for weakhand draw or in my weakside front pocket, depending upon how I'm dressed. Next year I'll probably pick up a Glock 26 and carry it in place of the SP101 when I'm carrying the Glock 19. I doubt I'll give up the J-Frame though.

I find that carrying two guns on the hip helps to "balance" me out and actually makes concealing easier as I appear more symetrical. Also, once I dress to hide one gun, it's pretty easy to add a second or third gun to the mix. If I'm in a gunfight and need a reload I don't want to waste time inserting a magazine or fumbling with a Speedloader, hence the multi-gun carry. Also, I have a gun available to me with either hand no matter what position I may find myself in.

I have had need of my BUG once when I was busy deflecting a blade with my strongarm. The minimum number of guns I'll carry off duty is two, but I prefer three. It's nice to have options. :)

I have a Smith Airweight on my ankle 99% of the time whether I am carrying another gun or not.

I always have a P3AT in my pocket. It's my usual stand alone carry piece.

It seems to me that going for one's ankle may be a bit obvious, time consuming and attention getting in a life or death situation, like "why's that guy going for his foot?"

Smith 642 or a Kel-Tec P32, depends on how I feel and where I'm going.

I just got a Taurus PT-22, and a DeSantis Superfly pocket holster for the Beretta Tomcat to go with it. It is small, pretty light, and while I would never be comfortable with it as a primary gun it with nine sixty grain solid lead bullets might help me out if I ever needed to buy myself a few more seconds to get my real carry gun into play. My primary was a CZ PCR, but my MTAC fits my FNP9-M so perfectly and it conceals so well I swithced to that. Previously I never had a BUG.

When it Comes to a Carry weapon I Consider the 5 Cs:

Concealability - how easy to eliminate printing?
Capacity - the more, the better
Caliber - the bigger, the better
Confidence - when I pull trigger, will it go BANG!? Will it hit what I'm aiming at?
Cost - hard to put a price on your life, but realistically, not everyone can afford a Rohrbaugh

Obviously, all these Cs interact and there is give and take in every variable of the equation. For example, increase caliber/capacity, decrease concealability. The Cool thing is that there are SO MANY excellent Choices out there to fit your body type, shooting prowess, environment, and budget.

In my case, after MANY, MANY trail and errors, I carry a Seecamp LWS32.
My next door neighbor, who is also about 5'11" and 190, carries a 5" 1911 Springfield TRP. Go figure.

My edc is on my week side. So when I carry something bigger and better it turns into a bug. I have two guns on me about 50% of the time.

I carry a 1911 full sized (5" barrel) as my primary, and as a backup, have a Kahr P9 Covert (9mm) in a Smart Carry rig.

Back-up- Beretta 21a in the front pocket. I don't like using the back pockets for anything of value. Paranoid about pickpockets, I s'pose.

Mine is my Kel-tec P3AT in one of my Rough Outs in a back or front pocket carry for my weak hand.

working in LE and security I initially carried a S&W Mod 60 on my ankle, and after an encounter left me flat on my back struggling for my primary, I moved it to a LH middle of back position. A few times I've carried a PT 22 in my back pocket to supplement whatever else I was carrying for comforts sake.

Makarov. Really.

Well, the question I think had to do with concealability. I do prefer a full sized pistol or revolver, but when I have to, I carry a Makarov in .380, and it fits nicely in a pocket. It's better than leaving the big firepower at home and not carrying anything.:scrutiny:

Anyway, I use one of those pocket holsters - there are a couple of makers that make a "one size fits most" pocket liner sort of holster, sort of tacky black rubber sort of stuff, that clings to the inside of your pocket but is smooth inside. The Mak will fit even in my larger vest pocket.:p

For what it's worth, try an ankle holster - I defy anybody to draw a handgun quickly from one. Maybe one of those little Olympic gymnast girls can do it, but I sure can't.

The Mak is handy, durable, reliable, accurate. Yeah, I know, underpowered, but like I said - carrying a Mak in .380 beats not carrying.

I have a Kel Tec P11 that's normally a primary, but becomes back up if I carry a bigger gun IWB. I also have a snubby ultralite .38 I can ankle or pocket carry as a back up. I have many ways. If nothing else, I have a NAA mini in a holster grip I can simply pocket. Beats nothing if the primary breaks and if I can't carry something bigger. I normally only carry back up when traveling to the big citiy or on my route when making collections. (part time job and collections are once a week) I pocket the P11 or the snubby and for back up, they just stay in the pocket while a .357 or .45 or bigger 9 goes on the hip IWB.

My taurus 651 goes with me every where usually as back up but sometimes it is all i take
