Free Rifle

I was helping my sister clean up some stuff around her house as a precursor to her moving yesterday. She pulls a .22 out of a closet and says, "Do you want a gun?" Easy answer...

It's her husband's - it was his grandfather's actually. It was his idea to give it to me. He has no interest at all, and knows I'm into the things.

It's not worth much, but I think it's pretty cool anyway. It'll be great for teaching my kids to shoot (single shot bolt action). It's a Springfield 53A, which as near as I can tell is actually a Savage/Stevens product from between WWI and WWII.

My cousin-in-law gave all my cousin's guns to her brother-in-law. Pissed me off because some of the guns have been in the family for generations. She's not a direct descendant and her brother-in-law is not even related to her.

So, before you "settle in" . . . Ask the family of grandpa if there's someone in direct descension who's interested in grandpa's gun.

Maybe my grandfathers meant more to me though. Heck. His could have been abusive drunks for all I know. "shrugs

Isn't gitting free guns nice. My dad has handed down 4 to me, all pre 1970. A friend of mine gave me a Marlin semi-auto .22, but about half of the pieces are missing. It's only going to cost about $80 to get it working again.

I picked up a ratty Model 53A about a year and a half ago at a local gun store for $100. It was a tad over-priced I thought since it had some light surface rust and the stock was scratched up. But I knew it'd clean up nice and I always wanted one since my cousin let me shoot his when I was a kid.

I sanded the stock a little and refinished it with two coats of Tung oil and stripped and re-blued it using about $10 worth of Birchwood Casey products. It turned out real nice. Single shot rifles are the most fun to hunt varmints with.

I want a free gun...

Actually, I can't complain for a few more years, I guess. So far, I've inherited a double 12ga, a tiny little break open .22, an NAA Mini, a Beretta 1934, and an old old flintlock riding pistol from my grandparents. I think I've spent my free gun bucks for quite a while.
The unfortunate part is, the only one that fires is the Beretta. Next trip home will be with an empty rifle case that will fill up and return with 2-3 project guns.

that is cool! i had a NEF HandiRifle given to me from my aunt, after my uncle died. it is a heavy barreled .223 with a 4-12 bushnell scope and a bipod. it shoots great! it is a bit heavy, but for free, thats ok.

Funny, I'd rather see my stuff go to someone who would make good use of it and enjoy it than a child who would leave it in the back of a closet. Doesn't matter much what it is.

This past weekend I went to visit my dad in Camden. I had mentioned to him that I was planning to get myself a compact .45 when I had the money.

Well out of nowhere he just gave me a Rock Island Officer's model! Still haven't got to shoot the thing, but hey, Yay for free guns!

When I got married, a lawyer friend of mine told me that he was given a gun from a questionable character, and thought I would want it. It was a little PPK in .22, have not shot it yet but I will as soon as I have the time!
