Question on a M1A sling

Sounds like you want a USGI web sling. You can get used ones, probably from Numrich, or any number of other sites that sell military surplus. Fulton should have new-made ones, available in 3 colors (collect 'em all!).

+1. USGI Web-Sling is an amazing piece of equipment for steady shooting at moderate to long ranges. Appleseed advocates the use of them over any other kind of sling.

For carbines/CQB weapons, then a tac-sling is said to be the best.

But, for the M1A, nothing beats the USGI web-sling.

Wait, the guy in that video has the quick-adjust tab turned the wrong way, doesn't he? I have mine so that the tab opens down, away from the rifle, not up, towards the rifle.

Try Cheaper Than Dirt first, they have 'em in new condition in OD Green for $6.99. I payed like $9.99 for a black one from Numrich's this past week because Cheaper Than Dirt was out of theirs. Don't pay more than $11 or $12 for one.

Also check into a leather 1907 from Turner or Les Tam.

The BAR canvas sling. Just like the canvas M-1 sling, but longer.

The extra lenght is not needed for shooting, but it is nicer for carrying.

Is the web sling better, or is the leather 1907 sling better?

I've looked at both, and the web sling must be detached from the buttstock to work correctly in the arm loop sling configuration, whereas the leather sling remains attached while in the arm loop sling.

Depends on if you want two more pounds of leather hanging off your rifle or not.

The GI sling is hard to beat for general all-round use.

The guy in that video was also handling a loaded and charged M1 with the muzzle in the air and the safety off. He's also sitting on the ground in front of the firing line, with other shooters on the line at the benches. The cameraman was in front of the firing line too.

That's not a biggie at all. The J-hook comes of the sling swivel without much fuss, and it makes a very stable loop sling.

Both leather 1907 and web slings will be stable and effective.

The leather looks much nicer, and probably is a more comfortable sling for competition. I would try to own both, personally. Use the leather for competition, etc, and the web sling for hunting, etc.

When I shot a lot of CMP matches I used a USMC shooting jacket and a web sling.

When "slinging up" with a leather sling, you normally unhook the rear sling section and rehook it for maximum slack anyway.
