I chanced across this interesting "Teaching and Learning in China" website when I did a Google search on "secondhand lions guns" to try to figure out the guns used in the great movie "Secondhand Lions" for this thread.

http://www.krigline.com/lions.htm

Note: The movie frequently used hyperbole to add humor (i.e., exaggerations of movement or activity). For example, when the lion escapes, everyone in the family gets a gun and goes after it (including the children!). In “real life” you would not give a gun to a child, and two bachelors would not own about 10 hunting guns, so these are both examples of hyperbole.

:rolleyes: Ex-squeeze me?

A) In my "real life", I would certainly give a gun to a "child" I trusted (I'm guessing around 12 years old in the movie), before an "adult" I did not trust.

B) If I was two bachelors, we would definitely own 10+ "hunting guns". :)

bachelors would not own about 10 hunting guns,

Don't be so sure.

While gun ownership stats are impossible to prove, one way or another, I have read at least 2 studies showing that firearm ownership in the US is not spread evenly among the US population with a small percentage of firearms owners owning a large nuber of guns and a very large percentage of firearms owners who own less than 3 guns. Do not recall numbers offhand and I have to go to work so I do not have time to look up right now.

Again, gun ownership stats are impossible to prove.

NukemJim is correct. The vast majority of gun owners in the US own less than 3 guns. Those of us with more than that are in the minority.

So, while we might not think that there's anything unusual about a closet full of guns the average person across the US would think it comical or threatening depending upon the presentation.

:) Yeah, that struck me as odd instruction and an odd interpretation as well.

Although not every household would possess "10 hunting guns" certainly it is a fact that some would have a bunch.

I know of instances where children of 8 or 9 years of age were entrusted with hunting rifles and/or shotguns.

Won't the Chinese be surprised?:what::what::what:

I'm sure that is true. However, given the character and temperament of those two bachelors, I wasn't surprised at all to see that many guns. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few more back in the house!

I remember that scene in the movie. Terrible gun handling. As they go into the cornfield they've got guns pointing at each other all over the place. The two smallest children are holding a single gun while bringing up the rear, and the gun is pointing at the adults who went in first.

Maybe that's what they mean by hyperbole.

statistics

can you hold a poll?sure.do you own a gun?what what I would not have a gun in my house guns are bad.polster oh you dont have a gun?? no,no bad.
how many gun owners are so stupid they would advertise there ownership.??
:uhoh::rolleyes::fire:

close cousin to the TIDYBOLE man?
cant remember where/when i read that the average number owned by those who have guns in the home was 1.2 seemed kinda low to me but what NukemJ posted makes sense--the vast majority count their guns, enthusiasts counts their safes

Right, guns should only be discussed in darkened rooms behind locked doors with people who have passed rigorous questioning. That way it doesn't look like owning guns is a normal and common occurance.

I think that HYERBOLE is the name of the supersized hole that is made in an accidental discharge!

Nah. Hyperbole is where the BG is propelled at least 15 feet backward and airborne after being shot with a 45 ACP. (Ala, the first shooting scene in "Last Man Standing.")

I got my first gun when I was about 6 or 7. I never blew anyone away. Also, my dad kept his 12 gage and ammo in his bedroom closet (I know, I know) and if I had tried I probably could have loaded it. I respected the gun, but I was deathly afraid of the butt whipping I would have gotten if I had messed with it.

...and two bachelors would not own about 10 hunting guns, so these are both examples of hyperbole.

This statement has absolutely nothing to do with the average number of guns owned by the average American, and everything to do with cultural assumptions on the part of the Chinese that find it unthinkable that citizens in any country would legally be allowed to own so many firearms, and even if they could, that they would choose to do so.

Are the Chinese allowed to own guns for hunting, if they get a permit? (Even if they could, there's probably not a good chance of actually getting the permit.)

Am I reading that link wrong or is that site maintained by an American family living in South Carolina?

From the site:
At the top of this page, you will find links to a few pages with photos we think our students would like to see. We call South Carolina "home"; Vivian and Andrew always lived there before moving to China, but Michael has also lived and worked in many states (primarily Georgia, Ohio. Pennsylvania and South Carolina).

I tend to agree with post #3 and #6, but then again to me it doesn't make much sense. Between me and my father, and step-father; there's better than 35 guns. Rifles, pistols, revolvers, and shotguns and at least 20 rounds for each one, though for some I have 200+ rounds on hand. And I know we aren't the exceptions...

ummm im 18 and a bachelor....i have 8 plus a hand gun id say if i lived with a nother bachelor as a roomy wed have around 20 lol

well, I'm a bachelor, and I own 9 guns, but I don't own a single "hunting" gun, as I've never been hunting. I do have a few that could conceivably be used for hunting, though.
