Newbie 9mm Powder Question

Every powder listed in the posts above will serve you well...but, since no one else mentioned a couple of other outstanding choices, I will. Winchester's WSF and Ramshot's Silhouette (formerly WAP) are both outstanding in 9MM. Both meter like water, have good case density and a wide load range especially, Silhouette. Silhouette has a very linear pressue curve and while not for the faint of heart, some shooters have taken a 115 grain bullet to 1440 FPS to make major with it.

I use 5.0 grains of Unique with 115 FMJ and 124 grain LEAD. Both shoot very well out of my XD9

Thanks again.

I stopped by the toy store last night and picked up a pound of 231, Titegroup, and Unique. Unfortunately they don't stock Vihtavuori powders so I couldn't pick up any N320. I did notice that Vihtavuori puts out the best free loading handbook that I've seen on the web. It has a great chart comparing the speed of almost every powder from a number of manufacturers. I'll see if I can cut and past it.

Do any of the loading manuals actually list plated bullet loads? The only book I have right now is Lyman.

Vihtavuori list quite a few loads for plated bullets and some of the "compilation" type manuals such as Lee's, Loadbooks & similar do as well. You can substitute data for similar bullet profiles in lead -or- use midrange jacketed data for the plated bullets just fine. Don't push them too hard (they recommend staying below 1200 FPS) and don't over-crimp.

As a FYI, I've pushed plateds to 1300+ in a .357sig with no issue. I 'spect it depends on the barrel and the plated bullet. If you're going to cross 1200fps, ease up to and past it to see if your accuracy holds. If accuracy falls off, that'd probably be your first sign that things are going awry with the bullet engaging the rifling properly.

Rainiers are NOT Jacketed bullets and should not be loaded as such!
I loaded Rainier 124's with 4.4 of Titegroup and liked the result. This is a jacketed load, but I had no trouble with the Rainiers even though many will say use only lead loads.

Q3. Do your bullets have ANY velocity restrictions?
A. In general, our bullets typically perform their best when shot at velocities no greater than 1,200 to 1,250 Feet per second (FPS).

Q6. What if I can't find load data for your bullets?
A. If you have a load for a cast lead bullet, that will transfer across the board as far as our bullets go. We recommend that you reduce
a load for a jacketed bullet by 10%.
